Folk songs are those songs which have been sung by the soul of the people who lived, created and enjoyed them. They also should be sung by the heart of the people who sing them today. You can not sing folk songs properly until you understand their relationships to society and local culture and become familiar enough with them to enjoy them as part of your own ordinary life. Therefore, when integrating folk songs into music education, an integrated approach based on socio-cultural understanding is essential. Such an integrated approach is emphasized in the revised curriculum of 2007. The curriculum suggests coordination of the following elements when teaching folk songs: the local language, nature, culture, history, customs, and dance. This study analyzes these elements in the text books for 5th graders and suggests a teaching method which synthesizes them into Jeju traditional shaman ceremony, Segyung Nori, to teach Jeju folk songs in an integrated fashion. Since provinces other than Jeju also have their own traditional Gut-nori forms in shaman rites, a similar approach could be applied for learning their folk songs as well. It is expected that learning the Jeju folk songs through the traditional Gut-nori composed with folk tales, myth, dialect, folk songs, history, customs and culture will lead students to a deeper understanding of their local community and an ability to sing their folk songs with greater sincerity.

민요는 그 노래를 불렀던 사람들의 마음을 가지고 불러야 한다. 또한 민요는 그 노래를 부르는 사람의 마음으로 불러야 한다. 민요를 통해 당시의 사회와 문화를 이해하고, 민요를 자기의 노래로 인식하여 친밀하게 여기며 일 상에서 즐겨 부를 때 진정 민요를 부른다고 할 것이다. 민요 교육에 있어서 민요만이 아닌 사회 문화적 이해를 바탕으로 하는 통합적인 접근이 요구되는 것도 바로 이러한 까닭이다. 개정 2007년 교육과정에서도 사회, 문화적 맥락에서의 통합적 접근을 강조하고 있다. 민요 지도에 있어 통합적 으로 접근할 수 있는 요소로는 지역의 방언, 자연, 생활 문화, 역사, 풍속, 춤 등이 있을 수 있다. 여기에서는 제 주도 민요를 지도하기 위해 초등학교‘ 5학년 2학기 교과서 속에서 이러한 통합적 요소를 추출하고 그러한 내용 을 제주도 무당굿놀이 중 하나인 세경놀이와 연계해서 지도하는 방안을 제시하였다. 동해안 지역을 비롯한 여러 지역의 무가에서도 제주도 세경놀이와 같은 놀이굿이 전승되고 있으므로, 각 지역의 민담, 전설, 설화 등을 소재로, 방언, 민요, 역사, 민속, 문화를 엮어 이어들과 함께 하나의 새로운 놀이굿으로 풀 어낸다면, 학생들이 지역 문화를 종합적으로 이해하고 민요를 더욱 의미 있게 부를 수 있게 될 것으로 기대한다.
