The appearance and change of the Comparative discussion about Admiral Yi Sun-sin and Horatio Nelson in Japanese Modern times - Based on the influence of the discussion about Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Togo Heihachiro -
The main objective of this research paper is to find out a cause for comparison between Admiral Yi Sun-sin and Horatio Nelson in the discussion of Yi Sun-sin and the influence of the discussion of Togo Heihachiro to this discussion of Yi Sun-sin in Japanese modern times. Since the introduction of Western civilization in the Meiji Restoration, the Japanese have come to know of Britain’s Nelson and France’s Napoleon Bonaparte. And They created a discourse that directly compares Napoleon to Hideyoshi and Nelson to Yi Sun-sin. The comparison between the two was natural because Admiral Yi and Nelson each had a common sense that they protected from the invasion of Napoleon and Hideyoshi each in the sea. Also, when considering Japan, trying to compete with the West, We can imagine Yi was described as a representative admiral of East Asia against the West. After the Russo-Japanese War, a naval hero named Togo Heihachiro appeared in Japan, and the discussion of Yi Sun-sin was changed. For the Japanese, the image of the East Asian naval hero, Nelson of East Asia was Admiral Togo, and it weaken the image of Yi Sun-sin as the East Asian naval hero, Nelson of East Asia. Eventually, the discussion of Yi Sun-sin changes into the assessment of his own tactics and personality, and the comparison with Nelson would only end up in relation to the similarities in the situation of death.
