Okutsu Keiichiro claims that the use of the passive sentence varied by the use of the passive sentence was affected by the writing style and passive sentences frequently appeared . This study evaluated whether passive sentences more frequently appeared in the literary style than in the conversational style, as previously claimed, by analyzing scripts. I classified the description and the conversation section in the script as the literary style and the conversational style, respectively. Afterward, the quantities of them were compared. The results of this study showed that a number of passive sentences in the conversation section were almost twice of that in the description. It was noteworthy that passive sentences consisted approximately 60% of conversation section. Although the script of scenarios tends to have more conversation section than description, the script used in this study had the roughly equal amount of conversation section and description. The results implied that the usage of passive sentences could be affected by another factor in addition to writing style. In other words, it would be possible that the usage of passive sentences is determined by the seriousness of the contents and writing style is a secondary factor. Moreover, many passive sentences in the description were used to describe situations, such as the verb of the Position, the verb of the Adhesion, the verb of Petting and the verb of the Pattern replacement. Contrarily, passive sentences were frequently used in conversational statements to express the actions and intention of people such as the verb of the Language activities, the verb of the Position, the verb of the Pattern replacement, the verb of the Attitude and the verb of the Intention. I also found that the frequency of passive sentences was approximately 3% of the description sentences and approximately 4% of the conversational sentences. These results were believed as the characteristics of passives sentences in the description and conversation section of scripts. However, further studies are needed to verify the findings.
