This paper focuses on the “Collection of poems; the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake(詩集·阪神淡路大震災)”, which symbolizes this natural disaster since the “the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake” in January 1995. So, I systematically analyzed how modern Japanese writers perceived and responded to the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. Through these insights, I have searched for the function and role of literature on these disaster situations by systematically analyzing the backgrounds of the Japanese writers` publishing this poetry, as well as the related ways of these huge disasters and contemporary Japanese literature. The “Collection of poems; the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake” was planned by the group `Art, Aid, Kobe` which was created as a result of voluntary movement aiming at `revival of culture` in a short time after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. In this sense, “Collection of poems; the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake” had the characteristics of a “poem of repose of souls” of a great disaster. This can be seen in characteristics of this poetry in terms of the literary representation of the disaster situation of Kobe and Osaka, the grief and fear of the victims, the disastrous reality and the collapsed life base. However, poets who participated in this poetry not only depict the disaster situation of the time, but also critically depicted the civilization, city, and human desire that has created human civilization. And then poets sang hope of the future in this desperate reality. They sought comfort and encouragement to the victims who were trying to regenerate and revive, as well as the affection for their area and hometown. The greatest feature of this poetry is that the phenomenon of the great earthquake was to close up with the aspect of the war that the Japanese experienced during the Pacific War.

이 논문은 1995년 1월 `한신아와지대지진` 이후 이 자연재난을 형상화한 『시집·한신아와지대지진(詩集·阪神淡路大震災)』을 대상으로 하여 이 한신·아와지대지진에 대해 일본현대문학자들이 어떻게 인식하고 대응하였는지를 체계적 분석한 것이다. 이를 통해 당시 일본문학자들이 이 시집을 간행하게 된 배경은 물론, 이러한 거대재난과 일본현대문학의 관련방식을 체계적으로 분석함으로써 이러한 재난 상황에 대한 문학 의 기능과 역할을 탐색하였다. 『시집·한신아와지대지진』은 한신·아와지대지진 이후 얼마 지나지 않은 시점에서 `문화의 부흥`을 목표로 하여 자발적 운동의 결과로 만들 어진 `아트·에이드·고베`라는 단체에 의해 기획, 간행된 시집이다. 이런 의미에서 『시집·한신아와지대지진』은 거대재난의 `진혼시`와 같은 성격을 띠고 있었다. 이는 거대재난을 당한 고베와 오사카의 재난 현황과 피해자들의 슬픔과 공포, 그리고 비참한 현실과 붕괴된 삶의 기반을 문학적으로 형상화하고 있다는 점에서도 이 시집의 `진혼시`적인 성격을 충분히 알 수 있다. 그러나 『시집·한신아와지대지진』이라는 시집 에 참여한 시인들은 당시의 재난상황을 그리는 데 그치지 않고, 지금까지 인간이 만들어온 문명과 도시, 그리고 이러한 문명을 만들어 온 인간 의 욕망을 비판적으로 형상화하였다. 그리고 나아가서는 이러한 절망적인 현실 속에서 미래의 희망을 노래하고 다시 재생과 부흥을 향해 노력 하는 피해자들에게 위로와 격려, 자신들이 사는 지역과 고향에 대한 애정의 마음도 동시에 형상화하고자 하였다. 또한 『시집·한신아와지대지 진』이라는 진재시집에서 가장 큰 특징은 이 대지진의 현상을 태평양전쟁 당시 일본인들이 경험하였던 전쟁의 양상과 클로즈업시켜 보려고 했다는 점이다.
