The books or studies of Korean music history in the period has been less than other periods, and carelessly dealt with. For this reason, this paper aimed to examine the contents of the modern and contemporary history of Korean music which in the music textbook of Korean high school, 『Music and Life』 and develop the improvement direction for educating the history of Korean music. The periodization of modern and present time in the 10 music textbooks of high schools, 『Music and Life』 has been differently written, for example, most of the books consider ‘modern time’ from the Gabo Reform of 1894 or 1910, and some of them present the time as ‘20 century music’ without division of modern and present time. Additionally, the contents of the textbooks have been written as simple sentences, not in order of the age. The fusion or crossover style has been very importantly written as contemporary Korean music, and the learning activities and repertoires of the textbooks have been mostly focused on newly composed music. A lot of photos and pictures presented in the books had incorrect contents as well as some of them recently taken had not reflected the historical phases of the times. Thus, this paper presented the improvement direction for educating the modern and contemporary history of Korean music by dividing five categories. Korean music has been transformed through the modern and present times, turbulent period of politics․society․culture. Therefore, this paper indicated the necessities of the discussion of the transmission of Korean music changing in the present as well the accurate historical fact of Korean music.

본 연구는 고등학교 『음악과 생활』교과서를 중심으로 연구물이 매우 적고 다른 시대에 비해 소홀히 다루어지고 있는 한국음악사 중 근․현대 내용의 분석과 개선 방향을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 총 10종의 고등학교 『음악과 생활』 교과서에서 한국음악사와 관련된 근·현대의 시대 구분은 ‘근대’의 시점(始點)을 갑오개혁 또는 1910년으로 정한 곳이 대부분이었고 근·현대를 구분하지 않고 ‘20세기 음악’으로 제시하는 등 출판사마다 다른 양상을 띠었다. 학습 내용은 근대의 내용이 연도나 시기 순으로 배열된 것이 아니라 단순한 문장 나열이 많았다. 또한 현대의 내용에서 퓨전이나 크로스오버 등에 의한 국악을 매우 긍정적인 측면으로 기술하고, 학습 활동 및 악곡의 선정 역시 대부분 현대의 창작음악이었다. 학습 내용 및 활동에 따라 제시된 사진 및 삽화 자료들 중 일부는 오류 내용이 있거나, 최근에 촬영한 사진을 수록하여 시대상을 반영하지 못한 경우도 있었다. 따라서 본 연구는 근·현대 한국음악사 교육의 개선 방향을 다섯 항목으로 나누어 제시하였다. 본 연구를 통해 정치․사회․문화의 격동기인 근현대를 통해 변화해온 한국음악사 교육의 중요한 수단이 될 수 있는 음악교과서는 내용의 정확성뿐만 아니라 현재도 변화하며 전승되는 음악의 서술 방법에 대한 구체적인 논의가 요구됨을 알 수 있었다.
