The purpose of this study is to understand the 18th century Korean music in a contextual manner through the reading of paintings by Kim Hong-do. Recognizing that the previous studies remained at the level of introducing some instruments and forms setting of performance through painting-based teaching methods of Korean music , the current study sets out to figure out various information in paintings and examine the content about music and the class that enjoyed music in various contexts as well as the instruments and forms of performance. The study thus employed Korean traditional appreciation method of paintings called "paintings reading" which is to appreciate paintings in relation to the old stories and episodes pertaining to paintings as well as the symbols of objects in old paintings. Examined in the study were the paintings by Kim Hong-do that painted great deal of music genre paintings. By reading the paintings, the current study generalized the instruments and form of performance played in the 18th century when Kim Hong-do was actively working as an artist, and it also presented the application methods and backgrounds of the 18th music culture. Furthermore, the study addressed the diverse backgrounds related to the music of the times and the people that enjoyed music including society, economy, politics, and ideology by analyzing the symbols of objects, extractions, presentations, and epilogues in the paintings.

이 논문의 목적은 김홍도 그림 읽기를 통해 18세기의 국악을 맥락적으로 이해하도록 하는 데 있다. 기존에 그림을 활용한 국악 교수 방법이 악기나 연주형태를 소개하는데 그치고 있어 그림에 나타난 다양한 정보를 파악하고, 악기와 연주형태뿐만 아니라 음악과 음악 향유층과 관련된 내용을 다양한 맥락 속에서 살펴보고자 한 것이다. 이를 위해 옛 그림에 나타난 사물의 상징과 그림과 관련된 고사나 일화와 관련하여 그림을 읽는 ‘그림 읽기’라고 하는 우리의 전통적인 그림 감상법을 활용하였으며, 음악풍속도를 많이 그린 김홍도의 그림을 선택하였다. 그림 읽기를 통해 그가 활동하던 18세기에 연주되었던 악기와 연주형태를 일반화하고, 활용 방식 및 배경에 대해 제시하였다. 또한 그림에 나타난 사물의 상징, 제발(題跋), 제시(題詩), 발문 등을 분석하여 당시의 음악과 음악을 향유하던 사람들과 관련된 사회, 경제, 정치, 사상 등 다양한 배경에 대해 제시하였다.
