The purpose of this study is to reveal that 18 variant middle school music textbooks, which complied with the Revised National Curriculum of 2009, contain a considerable amount of misinformation regarding the history of Korean music and that the organization of the contents is not easy to understand in music history contexts. To achieve these ends, this study analyzed the presentations of Korean music history in those books and addressed the aforementioned problems subsequently emphasizing that such misinformation, if conveyed without correction in the classroom, could lead to an unfortunate situation in which students accept fallacious contents just as passed on by their teachers. The findings of analyzing the 18 middle school music textbooks are as follows. ․Most of the textbooks do not provide enough explanation for the objectives of studying Korean music history or for activities required for the subject. ․The distinction of musical eras varies greatly from one textbook to another with some serious errors. ․A great deal of the texts is written without accurate understanding of certain concepts and a number of explanations are not grounded on historical facts. ․A number of materials and data are misapplied to learning. In some cases, lack of additional explanation for given materials makes it difficult for students to understand historical contexts. ․Too many historical facts are merely enumerated, making it practically impossible for students to comprehend them in cultural and societal contexts. ․Some of the textbooks provide little information about Korean music history in contrast to their treatment of Western music history. The above problems underscore the absolute need for national level monitoring and evaluation of textbooks. Thorough scrutiny of textbooks through the textbook screening system will preclude us from misleading students about the history of Korean music.

본 논문은 2009 개정 교육과정에 따른 18종의 중학교 음악교과서의 한국음악사 내용에 오류가 상당히 많고, 음악사적 맥락에서의 이해가 용이하지 않게 구성되어 있는 등의 문제점을 드러내는 데에 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 먼저 한국음악사 내용을 분석하고, 분석을 통하여 드러난 문제점을 부각함으로써 잘못된 내용이 교육 현장에서 그대로 전달될 경우, 교사들은 학생들에게 잘못된 역사를 전달하는 오류를 범할 수도 있으며 학생들은 사실과 다른 잘못된 내용을 학습하는 결과가 초래될 수 있음을 강조하였다. 본고에서 분석한 교과서는 2009 교육과정에 따른 18종의 중학교 음악교과서를 대상으로 분석한 결과, 1)한국음악사의 학습목표와 활동이 대부분의 교과서에 결여되어 있고, 2)교과서에 따라 시대구분에 상당한 차이가 있으며 심각한 오류가 많으며, 3)정확한 개념을 파악하지 못하고 서술한 사례가 많고, 음악사적 사실과 설명이 잘못된 부분이 적지 않다. 4)자료 활용에 있어 부적합한 사례가 많으며 자료에 대한 설명이 결여되어 음악사적 맥락의 이해가 어렵게 되어 있고, 5) 음악사의 내용이 지나치게 나열 형태로 제시되어 있어 문화, 사회사적 맥락에서의 이해가 거의 불가능하게 되어 있다. 6)일부 교과서의 경우, 서양음악사에 비해 한국음악사의 내용이 소략하거나 아예 없기도 하다. 이상의 문제점이 드러난 이상, 교과서 검정제도의 운영이 절대적으로 필요한 당위성을 강조하지 않을 수 없다. 검정제도에 의한 면밀한 검토를 통해 우리 스스로 잘못된 한국음악사를 학생들에게 지도하는 오류를 범하지 말아야 할 것이다.
