The purpose of this study is to investigate whether or not it is reasonable to assignin various ways the name of danso to mode and key by analyzing the features of themode of danso. This study discussed on how the scales of Gyemyeonjo and Pyeongjoof danso are composed, how they can be used and what the names of musical instrumentshistorically related with danso are. The name of danso, which can be identified withmusical scale, has been analyzed. This study examined the terms of scales in order toidentify the name of danso properly which previously has been improperly addressed. The name should be corrected to ‘Gyemyeonjo danso’, ‘Woojo danso’ and ‘Pyeongjodanso’ even though it is wrong to put such words Gyemyeonjo, and Woojo in front ofthe name of danso. Actually, mode and key have not been used in front of the namesof Gukakgi (Korean traditional musical instruments). In particular, calling Kyongjae dansoGyemyeonjo danso has caused confusion between mode and key. The notion of Pyeongjoin Pyeongjo danso is applied to both the mode name and the key name. Therefore, namingGyemeionjo danso, which means Gyemyeonjo for the mode name and is attached toKyongjae danso, should be reconsidered. This can be confirmed by Tongso, from 『Akhakqwebeom』, So, in the same way, it should be for 『Baegunamgeumbo』 and dansofor 『Hakpogeumbo』 which are similar to danso. Danso can be played both on a Gyemyeonjo scale and a Pyeongjo scale. Depending onthe center tone, the most frequently played scale of Pyeongjo is ‘Cheongjong centered Pyeongjo潢－汰－㳞－淋－潕(Kyongjae danso)’ and ‘Cheonghwangjong-centered Pyeongjo 林－南－潢－汰－㳞 (Pyeongjo danso)’. In the case of Gyemyeonjo, ‘Cheongimjong-centeredGyemyeonjo 汰－㳞－淋－潕－㶂 (Kyongjae danso). Also it is confirmed that Tory from various folk music, which consists of Pyeongjo and Gyemyeonjo, can be played on the basisof this scale. As a conclusion, ‘Woojo danso’, a pair of Pyeongjo danso with regard to the scaleof Kyongjae danso, is cautiously suggested as a possible alternative. However, naming‘Kyongjae danso’ or ‘danso’ is more proper than calling both the mode name and keyname together under a circumstance where the scale of Pyeongjo and Gyemyeonjo aredistinguished clearly in Kyongjae danso.

본고는 단소명(短簫名)에 음계명(音階名mode)과 조명(調名key)을 붙여서 단소의 명칭을여러 가지로 부르는 것이 합리적인지 단소 음계의 특성에 대한 분석을 통하여 고찰하는 것이목적이다. 단소의 평조와 계면조의 음계가 어떻게 구성이 되고 활용될 수 있는지에 대해 살펴보았으며, 역사적으로 단소와 관련 있는 악기들의 명칭에 대한 검토와 음계명과 함께 불리는 단소의 명칭을 분석하였다. 이를 통해 그 동안 혼란스럽게 사용되었던 단소의 명칭에 대해 올바르게 부를 수 있도록 음계적인 측면에서 논의를 진행하였다. 국악기의 이름 앞에 음계명(音階名mode)과 조명(調名key)을 사용하지 않는 상황에서 단소의 명칭 앞에 우조, 계면조와 같은 말을 넣어서 ‘계면조단소’, ‘우조계면단소’, ‘평조계면단소’라고 지칭하는 것은 잘못된 것이기에 바로 잡아야 한다. 특히, 평조단소의 대가 되는 경제단소를 계면조단소로 부르는 것은 음계명(音階名mode)과 조명(調名key)의 혼동으로 인해 야기된 것이며, 평조단소에서 ‘평조’의 개념은 음계명과 조명, 양자에 모두 적용되는 것이기 때문에 경제단소에 음계명인 계면조를 붙여서 계면조단소로 칭하는 것은 반드시 재고(再考)되어야 한다. 이는 단소와 비슷한 악기인『악학궤범』통소(洞簫)의 산형, 『백운암금보』의 소(簫),『학포금보』의 단소(短簫)를 통해서도 확인 할 수 있었다. 단소는 평조의 음계와 계면조 음계를 모두 연주할 수 있으며, 중심음에 따라서 가장 빈번하게 연주되는 음계는 평조의 경우 ‘청중(㳞)을 중심으로 하는 평조 潢－汰－㳞－淋－潕(경제단소)’와 ‘청황종(潢)을 중심으로 하는 평조 林－南－潢－汰－㳞 (평조단소)’, 계면조의 경우는 ‘청임종(淋)을 중심으로 하는 계면조 汰－㳞－淋－潕－㶂(경제단소)’이다. 또한 이 음계를 중심으로 하여 평조와 계면조로 된 여러 곡을 연주 할 수 있음을 확인 할 수 있었다. 경제단소의 음계와 관련하여 평조단소의 대가 되는 단소로서 ‘우조단소’의 가능성도 조심스럽게 제시되었으나, 경제단소에 평조와 계면조의 음계가 명확하게 드러나는 상황에서 음계명(音階名mode)과 조명(調名key) 붙여서 부르는 것보다는 ‘경제단소’, 또는 ‘단소’로 칭하는것이 가장 합리적일 것이다.
