China, known as the multi-ethnic nation with the largest population in the world, has 5000 years of history along with amazing ancient civilization. As a representative of young generation, we are very much proud of the rich cultural heritage our ancestors left us. There are thirty-one elements from China recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritages, which includes Kunqu Opera, MuqamGu Qin and its music, shadow puppetry, Calligraphy and so on. Since my career started from the performing arts festival organization, the involvement and witness of mine is more related to the performing arts. I will give more detailed introduction to the related projects, where modern minds encounter traditional arts. As you might have noticed, There are a group of Chinese artists like Lin Huaiming, well-known Choreographer in Taiwan; TanDun, celebrated Chinese composer; Rong Nianzeng, and Lin Zhaohua, Chinese theatre directors spare no efforts to study Chinese ancient culture and traditional arts form in order to create new works for long time. Surprisingly, by melting with more modern element, those works have been proved acceptable and well understood by Chinese young people. Even more, the delicate devised presentation successfully arise the curiosity and interests of Chinese traditional arts among young audience. However, how to extend the life span of Chinese traditional arts and play its education role in the new century? It could not be done by group of artists or any single institution. The whole education and arts mechanism and cultural ecology should be improved in order to be more supportive. China is now one of the fastest growing countries in terms of economy and finance development. When the whole society is quite market-driven and the speed of life gets faster and faster, how we encourage people to slow down and appreciate arts, even some arts from thousands years ago. How we could still ensure traditional arts connect to people’s life? In the eye of young generation, who were born after the 1980, we have different perspective of Chinese traditional arts. How to revise cultural policy to encourage all the parties concerned to maximize the improvement of educational ability and public engagement in terms of Chinese traditional arts. Consequently, I hope that some case studies I have made my research on will enlighten us with the encouragement to face the challenges.

세계에서 가장 많은 인구를 가진 다민족 국가로 알려진 중국은 5000년의 역사와 거대한 고대 문명을 지니고 있다. 그 후손으로 우리는 조상으로부터 물려받은 풍부한 문화유산에 대해 큰 자부심을 가지고 있다. 중국은 경극, 진나라와 그 음악, 그리고 그림자 연극이나 그림, 서예 등 유네스코에서 지정된 31가지의 세계문화유산을 보유하고 있다. 본 연구자는 공연예술축제조직위원회에서 근무하기 시작하면서 공연예술에 대한 안목을 키울 수 있었다. 본고에서는 먼저, 현대의 정신과 전통예술과의 만남에 관한 프로젝트에 대한 소개를 하였다. 이미 널리 알려진 바와 같이 중국에는 타이완의 안무가 린 화이 밍(Lin Huai ming), 저명한 중국 작곡가 탄둔(TanDun), 그리고 새로운 작품 창작을 위해 오랫동안 중국 고대문화와 전통예술을 연구해 온 중국인 공연 감독 롱 니안젱(Rong Nianzeing) 등과 같은, 예술가들이 있다. 놀랍게도 현대적 요소를 잘 녹여낸 이들의 작품은 중국의 젊은이들의 환영을 받고 있다. 더욱이, 정교하게 고안된 그 작품들은 중국의 젊은 청중들이 중국 전통예술에 대한 관심과 호기심을 갖게 한다. 그러나 그 작품들이 어떻게 중국 전통예술의 범위를 얼마나 넓혀줄 수 있을 것이며, 새 시대에 그것의 교육적 역할은 무엇인지에 대한 고민이 따른다. 그것은 예술가 단체나 어떤 위원회의 노력으로 이뤄질 수 있는 것은 아닐 것이다. 전체적인 교육과 예술의 체계, 그리고 문화 생태학이 훨씬 더 지지받을 수 있게 되어야 할 것이다. 중국은 경제와 금융의 발전이 가장 빠른 국가들 중 하나이다. 사회 전체가 마치 거대한 시장과 같고 삶의 속도도 점점 더 빨라지고 있는 시점에서 우리는 어떻게 사람들이 예술작품이나 수천 년 전의 예술을 감상하게 할 수 있을까? 그리고 전통예술이 사람들의 삶과 관련성을 맺을 수 있는지 확신할 수 있을까? 1980년대 이후에 태어난 젊은 세대들의 안목은 중국 전통예술에 관해 다른 관점을 가진다. 중국전통예술의 관점에서 공공성과 교육적 활용성을 극대화시킬 수 있는 관련된 모든 분야들을 장려하는 문화정책을 어떻게 개정할 수 있을까? 본 연구에서 제시한 여러 사례 연구들은 이러한 도전에 직면한 우리에게 희망과 도움이 될 수 있을 것이라 기대한다.
