Music is created within a particular social and cultural context. This is a canon that every ethnomusicologist learns in his/her classroom on the first day of his/her college year. When I was doing my fieldwork in the interior of Kalimantan (Borneo) ― where the Dayak tribes live ― I witnessed that every day the Dayak eldersgathered on the veranda of their longhouse (Lamin) after returning from the farm and sang their long epic history in a vocal music form called Kendau. Sitting among these elders were many kids and youngsters repeatedly listening to the singing until one day they had memorized the epics and could sing the Kendau themselves. This is the process of learning traditional music and the epic history of the Dayak tribe in their authentic socio-cultural setting. Today traditional Dayak long houses have been replaced by individual urban housing. Therefore, this natural learning process has alsogone. Yet the replacement of this value transmission cannot be found in other means, either in formal or informal modern educational institution. So the socio-cultural continuity between modern Indonesian national and traditional society has broken down. Traditional music that used to be the core of oral historical and socio-cultural transmission for indigenous people for generations has lost its educational function in the modern setting. The Dayak case is only one among many other cases that points toward the dynamic change in socio-cultural environments that has affected the ability of traditional music to educate its society in its original setting. In conclusion, this paper proposed that the Indonesian people have to find a new strategy and vision on how to revive the educational ability of traditional Indonesian music in a contemporary setting, in order not to lose the roots of our culture and identity as a nation. Additionally, this author expects that new musical means, such as the Indonesian National Orchestra (INO) and world music festivals inan urban context, can offer significant means for thepartialrevival of the educational ability of traditional music in modern day Indonesia.

음악은 특정한 사회 문화적 맥락 속에서 형성된다. 이것은 모든 민족음악학자들이 그들의 첫 학기에 교실에서 배우는 규범에 해당된다. 본 연구자는 다약(the Dayak) 부족이 살고 있는 보르네오섬의 칼리만탄(Kalimantan)으로 가서 연구할 때, 매일 어른들이 일터에서 돌아온 뒤에 라민(Lamin)이라는 긴 집의 베란다에 모여 켄다우(Kendau)라는 서사적 가사를 노래하는 것을 보았다. 그 어른들 사이에 앉아있는 많은 아이들은 그것을 계속 듣다 보면 어느새 그 가사를 저절로 외우게 되어 그들이 켄다우를 부를 수 있게 된다. 이것이 다약 부족이 전통적인 사회문화적 환경 속에서 서사시적인 전통음악을 배우는 과정이다. 오늘날 그 부족의 전통가옥형태인 긴 집은 도시의 가옥 형태로 대체되고 있다. 이에 따라 그 노래를 전통 가옥의 베란다에 모여 자연스레 보고 배우던 기회를 잃어가고 있는 것이다. 아직 이러한 가치 있는 전승을 대체할 만한 방법은 형식적이든 비형식적인 현대의 어느 교육기관에서도 찾을 수 없다. 따라서 현대 인도네시아와 전통사회 사이의 사회문화적 지속성은 단절되고 있다. 한 세대에서 다음 세대로 구전되어 온 역사적 사회적 전통을 현대 교육에서 그 기능을 잃어가고 있다. 다약 부족은 다른 많은 예들 중 하나에 불과한 것으로, 급격한 사회문화적 환경의 변화가 전통적 환경에서 그들을 사회화시켜온 전통음악의 역할에 영향을 주고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 결론적으로, 본 논문에서는 인도네시아 사람들이 자국 문화의 뿌리와 정체성을 잃지 않기 위해 현대적 교육환경에서 전통음악을 어떻게 되살릴 수 있는지에 관한 전략과 전망을 찾아야 함을 주장하였다. 또한 인도네시아 국립관현악단(INO)과 도시에서 개최된 세계음악축제 등이 현대 인도네시아에서 전통음악의 교육적 역할을 부분적으로라도 되살릴 수 있는 의미 있는 방법이라 기대하고 있다.
