This study is aimed at applying storytelling to the education of Korean folk songs. Since Korean folk songs are regarded as ethnic songs containing the stories of Korean lives, this study has designed the instruction method of Sangyeosori by using storytelling. Using the integrated approaches of Korean music and literature, this study focuses on the ‘narrative method’ of storytelling which is to understand the stories inherent in the songs themselves and to recognize that Korean folk songs are the songs of Korean lives. Thus, this study examined the educational means of storytelling and the two elements of character and space of the stories inherent in Sangyeosori. In addition to selecting the contents for instructing Sangyeosori from the Korean Music Curriculum, this study presents them by levels as the academic activities of ‘before Storytelling－Storytelling－after Storytelling’. This study reflects the method of storytelling on the instruction of Sangyeosori. Since folk songs narrate the lives of people and contains their culture, the approach to instructing these songs is considered to be a very important method. From these result, this author expects that this approach will be applied to teach other types of folk songs and that more studies regarding the educating of Korean folk songs and storytelling will be continued.

본고에서는 민요 교육에 스토리텔링을 적용해 보는 데 목적을 두고, 상여소리를 대상으로 스토리텔링을 활용한 민요 교육 방법을 제시해 보았다. 민요 교육의 방법으로 스토리텔링을 활용한 이유는 민요가 우리 민족의 삶의 이야기를 담고 있는 노래이기 때문이라는 점에서 비롯되었다. 민요 교육이 문학과 음악의 통합적 접근으로 이루어지기 위해서는 그에 적합한 교수․학습 방법이 필요한데, 스토리텔링의 ‘이야기하기’의 방법은 민요에 내재된 이야기를 이해하고 민요를 삶의 노래로 인식할 수 있는 방법적 토대가 될 수 있을 것이다. 민요 교육에 스토리텔링을 적용하기 위해 먼저, 스토리텔링의 교육적 의미를 고찰해 보았고, 상여소리에 내재된 스토리텔링의 요소를 인물과 공간의 두 가지 요소를 중심으로 분석하였다. 또한 음악과 교육과정의 내용 체계를 바탕으로 상여소리의 지도 요소를 각 영역별로 추출하여 이를 ‘스토리텔링 전 단계－스토리텔링 단계－스토리텔링 후 단계’에 따라 학습 활동을 제시하였다. 본고에서는 상여소리를 중심으로 스토리텔링을 적용해 보았지만, 스토리텔링을 활용한 상여소리 교수․학습의 예는 다른 민요 수업을 설계할 때도 적용될 수 있을 것이라 본다. 민요가 우리 민족의 삶과 문화를 이야기한 노래라는 면에서 민요 교육은 노래를 통해 우리의 삶과 문화를 이야기할 수 있는 방향으로 나아갈 필요가 있다. 스토리텔링은 이를 위한 하나의 방법으로서, 민요 교육에 폭넓게 적용될 수 있도록 앞으로 민요 교육과 스토리텔링을 접목한 연구가 계속적으로 이루어지길 기대한다.
