This paper highlights the entrepreneurial career path decision of new entrepreneurs. In particular, it is demonstrated under which condition they can afford the risk of entrepreneurial failures. For tackling this issue, a theoretic model to analyze how their expected payoffs are affected by either the probability to earn satisfactory startup successes or societal environments, i.e., the external resource funding burden which plays as a barrier for new entrepreneurs to launch own startups under limited resource endowments. According to the theoretic model’s predictions, the smaller the resource burden to new entrepreneurs is endowed, they are more likely to choose to run own startups. Also, they can pursue entrepreneurship when both a chance to earn entrepreneurial success high while entrepreneurial environments are well organized to lessen the external resource requirements for novice entrepreneurs. These predictions are empirically supported. In particular, individuals are the most likely to establish own startups when both factors are well supported; however, it is uncertain which one between them plays a more important role in an entrepreneurial career path decision making problem.

본 논문은 개인들의 직업경로로서 기업가 정신이 단순히 개인의 선택문제로 국한되는지 혹은 그 이상의 의미를 가지고 있는지에 대해 분석하고자 했다. 특히 본 연구는 기업가 정신이 실패할 경우에 발생하는 비용에 초점을 맞추고자 하는데, 이는 창업을 선택하는 개인들에게 있어 현실적으로 닥치는 가장 큰 부담이 외부 자원을 조달해야 한다는 것으로 만약 실패할 경우 조달된 외부자원은 전적으로 창업자가 상환해야 하는 부채로 남게 된다. 이러한 기본 인식하에서 창업을 고려하는 개인들이 설정하게 되는 기대이윤을 통해 두 가지 요소를 확인하는 이론모형을 전개했다. 현실적으로 양 요소는 기대수익을 결정함과 동시에 의사결정을 직접적으로 미치게 되고, 특히 흥미로운 부분은 양 요소가 어떠한 의사결정 상황을 창출하는 가의 여부와 어느 요소가 창업의 의사결정에 있어 더욱 중요할 것인가의 여부다. 이에 준해 이론모형은 창업의 성공 가능성을 높이는 요소와 외부 조달 비용을 절감시킬 수 있는 요소를 반영하고 양 요소의 조합에 따르는 창업의 결정 가능성을 분석했다. 이론모형의 예측결과는 잠재적 창업자들의 정보를 포함한 횡단면 분석을 통해 확증했고, 실증분석 결과 이론 모형이 제시하는 양 변수 조합과 창업의사결정은 지지되는 것으로 밝혀졌다.
