Ssangnyeobun story is about Choi Chiwon, who was a very famous man of letters during Silla dynasty. It has been considered as one of earlier novels, and it is recorded in many documents. But there are many disputed points, which have not been solved until now. In this thesis, I emphasized the following two facts. Firstly, the title and length of the story differ from document to document. So there is possibility that some content was added in later ages. It is important to distinguish them from the original work when we evaluate it from the viewpoint of literary history. Secondly, a site excavation, which was carried out in China, can give us some useful clues to explicating the narrative. At least, the original writer must have known the very site and felt sympathy for Choi Chiwon about his situation as a lonely foreigner.

본 연구의 목적은 쌍녀분 전승을 둘러싸고 있는 여러 쟁점들을 검토함으로써 작품이 지니는 소설사적 의미와 맥락을 재조명하기 위한 것이다. 최치원과 쌍녀분에 얽힌 이야기는 육조사적편류를 위시한 중 국 문헌, 그리고 대동운부군옥, 태평통재 등의 국내 문헌에 실려 있다. 이들 각편은 작품 제목과 분 량, 서사적 성격에 있어서 상이한 모습을 드러내고 있다. 이에 따라 작품의 작자, 창작 시기, 소설적 성 격, 각 편 간의 상호 관계, 원작품과 후대적 가필 여부, 주제의식 등 여러 가지 문제가 아직 미해결 상태 로 남아 있다. 아울러 근래 이루어졌던 중국 현지에서의 쌍녀분 발굴 성과는 작품을 둘러싼 여러 가지 쟁점을 해결하는 데 있어서 일정한 단서를 제공해 주고 있다. 현재까지의 연구 성과를 비판적으로 성찰 함으로써 한국 소설사는 물론, 동아시아 전기소설사의 관점에서 작품이 지니는 문학사적 위상을 바로잡 는 작업이 요구된다.
