The Liturgy of the Eucharist is an essential element of worship along with the Liturgy of the Word. The meanings of the Eucharist include not only Memorial of the event of Jesus’ crucifixion but also Thanksgiving to the Father and Invocation of the Holy Spirit. The Eucharist is a foretaste of the feast of the kingdom of God where children of God enjoy intimate fellowship. Mainline churches in South Korea have tried to renew their worship, with reflecting those eucharistic understandings in their worship books. However, there has been a gap between the eucharistic understandings of the worship books and the actual practice of worship of local churches. How can the churches embody the essential values and meanings of the Eucharist in worship? As an answer to the question, this study finds and suggests eucharistic implications from the meal on the mountain. This study explores John 6 and the early church documents relating to the meal on the mountain. The image of “the bread scattered on the mountain” in John 6 and the early church eucharistic documents has the eschatological desire of the unity of church. The meal on the mountain was an open commensality which welcomed all people regardless of age, sex and race. All participants on the mountain celebrated the real presence of Christ as they ate bread and fish until satisfied. The openness and inclusivity of the meal on the mountain which were based on the grace and love of God were the driving forces of transforming sinners into children of God.

성만찬 예전은 말씀의 예전과 함께 예배를 구성하는 핵심적 요소이다. 성만찬은 예수의 십자가 사건에 대한 기념일뿐만 아니라, 성부 하나님께 대한 감사와 성령 임재의 자리이다. 또한 성만찬에서 하나님의 자녀들은 함께 모여 천국 잔치를 미리 맛보며 성도의 친밀한 교제를 경험한다. 한국 교회의 주요 교단들은 각 예배서에 성만찬에 대한 이러한 이해를 반영하면서 예배의 갱신을 위해 노력해왔다. 그러나 예배서가 보여준 성만찬 이해들과 지역교회의 실제 예배현장 사이의 간격은 꽤 커 보인다. 어떻게 하면 한국교회의 예배현장 가운데 성만찬의 본래적 가치와 의미들을 충실히 되살려 낼 수 있을까? 본 논문은 이 물음에서 출발한다. 본 논문은 하나의 대안으로 동산 위의 식사에 담긴 성만찬적 함의들을 제시한다. 연구의 주요 대상은 동산 위의 식사와 관련된 요한복음 6장과 초기교회의 성만찬 문헌들이다. 동산 위 식사에서 부각되는 산 위에 흩어진 빵조각의 이미지는 초기교회 성만찬에서도 발견되는 교회의 하나됨에 대한 종말론적 열망을 담고 있다. 동산 위의 식사는 소수의 멤버가 아닌 다수의 무리가 참여하는 개방적 공동식사였다. 그곳에서 참여자들은 빵과 물고기로 실제적 식사를 나누었으며, 그리스도의 현재적 임재를 경축하였다. 동산 위 식사의 개방성과 포용성은 하나님의 은혜와 사랑에 기초하며, 그것은 죄인을 하나님의 자녀로 변화시키는 원동력이 된다.
