This study investigated the effects of group art therapy on the communication and inter-personal relations of mentally disabled individuals. 16 mentally disabled individuals residing in a city participated in the study. They were assigned to a control group of 8 and an experimental group of 8. The group art therapy program ran a total of 16 sessions, every Wednesday, each session 90 minutes long from January 4, 2012 to April 18, 2012. The instruments included a communication scale and a inter-personal relation scale. A pretest and posttest were given before and after the program. A follow-up evaluation was given 2 weeks after the end of the therapy program. Data were analyzed using a two-way Analysis of Variance (pretest, posttest, and follow-up evaluation) for repeated measures on IBM SPSS 19. Group art therapy was helpful in promoting the communication among them. The second finding was that in the inter-personal relations the experimental group showed significant differences only when the pretest results were compared with those of the follow-up evaluation. The experimental group showed only some increase when the pretest results were compared with those of the posttest. The finding suggests that group art therapy had some positive influence on the inter-personal relations of the participants, but the influence was not significant.

본 연구의 목적은 집단미술치료를 통하여 정신장애인의 의사소통과 대인관계에 미치는 효과를 알아보고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위하여 현재 D시에 거주하고 있는 정신장애인 16명 을 선별하여 실험집단과 통제집단에 각 8명씩 배치하였다. 집단미술치료 프로그램은 2012 년 1월 4일부터 4월 18일까지 매주 수요일 90분 동안 총 16회기로 진행되었다. 검사도구로 는 의사소통 척도와 대인관계변화 척도를 사용하였으며, 프로그램 실시 전․후 그리고 프 로그램 종료 2주 후에 추후검사를 실시하였다. 본 연구의 자료분석을 위해서 IBM SPSS 19 Statisties Program을 사용하였고 검사시기(사전검사, 사후검사, 추후검사)를 반복측정변 인으로 하는 이원변량분석을 실시하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 집단미술치 료가 정신장애인의 의사소통에 효과가 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 둘째, 집단미술치료가 정 신장애인의 대인관계에 미치는 효과에서 실험집단은 사전점수에 비해 사후, 추후 점수가 상승하였으나 추후검사에서만 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 있었다. 따라서 집단미술치료는 정신장애인의 대인관계에 긍정적인 영향은 미쳤으나 현저한 변화를 가져오기에는 한계가 있다고 할 수 있다.
