This study aims to find regional characteristics of Olle and Olle-Dam [paths and walls] in the old town area of Jeju city, known as "Mu-geun-sung," through research into the status of the spatial structures in the area. The research was mainly conducted through a literature survey and field surveys. The literature survey was conducted on the typification of alleys and stone walls. Field surveys were conducted to reveal the location, length, and materials of the stone walls in alleys. As a result, this study assesses the spatial characteristics of the alleys and the typological characteristics of the stone walls in the old urban areas of Jeju City. The unit alley located in the old city area of Jeju was severely damaged. Also, the stone walls could reveal that there are few areas where the original shape is preserved. The community’s management of the use of alleyways has not been properly carried out. In addition, there is concern about the damage caused by securing a road in the future. On the other hand, many of the damaged stone walls still basically retain their original shape. There were many stone walls that retained their original shape in the old alleys. For this reason, there is a high possibility that the alleys and stone walls located in the old urban areas of Jeju can be utilized as assets for the area. Based on the results of the above study, community recovery using the old alleyways of Jeju shows promise.

최근 정부는 지방 노후 중소 지역의 전략적 재생을 주목하고 있으며, 그 핵심과제로 해당 지역 커뮤니티의 역사와 문화적 가치를 활용한 소규모 주거 환경정비의 전략이 다각적으로 모색되고 있다. 그간 국내의 많은 지역들은 다수의 정책적 노력들에도 불구하고 지역의 역사와 문화적 맥락을 이해하지 못한 일방적 대안들로 큰 성공을 거두지 못해왔으며, 이에 대한 반성의 결과라 할 수 있을 것이다. 제주 역시 지역의 발전과 함께 번영을 누려 왔으나 근대화와 함께 큰 건축적 변화를 겪게 되었다. 이에 지역이 지닌 고유의 역사적 맥락과 문화를 고려한 지속가능한 지역 정주환경재생으로의 패러다임 전환요구가 높아지고 있는 가운데 제주의 올래와 올랫담은 지역 재생의 유용한 자산으로 높은 가치를 지니고 있다 할 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구를 통해 제주 무근성 내 현존 단위 올래는 분절 등 상당부분 훼손이 진행되고 있으며, 올랫담 역시 원형의 비율이 상대적으로 낮음을 알 수 있었다. 올래의 활용 측면에서도 유지와 관리가 적절히 이뤄지고 있지는 못하고 있으며 차로 확보 등을 이유로 향후 훼손이 예상되고 있었다. 한편 훼손된 올랫담이 원석의 허튼층쌓기를 기본틀로 유지하고 있었으며, 원형의 형태를 지닌 단위 올래 에서 올랫담의 원형 역시 높은 비율로 보전되고 있다는 점에서 지역 자산으로의 활용 가능성이 높음을 밝힐 수 있었다.
