Growing attention is being paid to born global, which means firms who go global from inception. Considerable discussion has been made on the topic in Korea over a decade. No study has been conducted to review literature and seek future research directions, while a majority of studies have focused on exploring the predictors of early internationalization and performance of born global and their causal relationships. It is suggested that there is a need to review research into born global in a Korean setting. This can allow for taking a deeper understanding of what factors help the firm enter foreign markets at an early stage and contribute to its international success. The present research aims to systematically review on literature regarding the concept and characteristics of born global and suggest for future research directions. Through the selection process of articles published in leading Korean journals, a total of 47 are identified and analyzed for an overview, operational definition of samples, research methodology and findings. As an analytical frame, in particular, an attempt is made to explore the previous literature by categorizing it into 2 types: rapid internationalization and performance. Its focus is on: author, sample criterion, sample size, analytical method, variable, and findings. Results lead to several suggestions for future studies: operational definition of samples, dark side of born global, use of external environment in relation to the domestic industry-specific structure, and some methodological issues. These ideas are expected to offer a promising avenue for opening up further discussion on the research of the early internationalizing firm. It is also expected that this study makes contributions to moving our understanding of born global research forward and seeking future research directions. Contributions and limitations are presented.

최근 창업 초기부터 해외시장을 목표로 사업을 전개하는 기업을 의미하는 이른바 본글로벌(Born Global)에 대한 관심이 증대되고 있다. 국내에서도 지난 10여년 동안 이 주제와 관련한 다양한 논의가 있어 왔다. 하지만 모든 연구들이 신속한 국제화 및 국제화 성과의 선행변수를 고찰하고 그 인과관계를 탐색하는데 초점을 두고 있는 반면, 본글로벌에 관한 국내의 연구 동향을 분석하고 향후 연구 방향을 설정하고자 하는 노력은 찾아보기 어려운 실정이다. 이에, 본 연구는 2015년까지 국내에서 진행된 본글로벌 연구의 현황을 체계적으로 분석하고 향후 연구 방향을 모색하는데 그 목적이 있다. 본 연구 목적에 부합된다고 판단된 국내의 주요 학술지에 게재된 본글로벌 관련 연구논문 총 47편을 대상으로 기본현황, 조작적 정의, 연구방법 그리고 연구 유형별 변수 및 결과 등을 검토하였다. 그 결과를 바탕으로 본글로벌의 조작적 정의, 부정적 영향 요인, 국내 산업구조의 특수성을 반영한 외부환경 특성 및 방법론적 이슈 등을 향후 연구과제로 제시하고 있다. 본 연구 결과는 국내에서 본글로벌에 대한 학술적 논의를 확장하고 향후 연구 방향을 설정하는데 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 마지막으로 연구의 시사점 및 한계점이 제시된다.
