A discussion of the formation for modern Korean literature took place by Karatani Kojin’s theory, since he provided a story of discovering the inner side through “Confession as a System”. Kojin’s modern Japanese literature insisted that rather a confession, sort of system, made an object to confess, bringing up an issue of obviousness of modern literature. However it is not that difficult to find out narratives of confession in the works published in the 1910 to 1920s, which were the beginning of modern Korean literature. Therefore if the awakening of the self and inner discovery through the subject consciousness are regarded as the principle of modern literature, the ‘confession’ should be the most certain form which shows such subject. Thus, this thesis examined the aspect of confession narrative which is placed as an important form in his literature, focusing on Lee Kwang-Soo’s early short stores ‘To My Little Friend’ and ‘Roaming’, and analyzed its meaning. All narrators who confessed in Lee’s works tended to romanticize all illnesses. In term of subjects’ falling ill and meeting their death, veracity of confession had earned. Therefore, although integrity and vision of future were not shown in the works, narratives earned veracity through illness and death, in which confession is supposed to be about, and moved forward as modern subjects. Narratives of confession were ascetic characters who remained divided in recognizing love. Modern subjects dreamed of free love, but were negative about intensive mental orientation and physical love proportionate to it. Lastly, narratives in the ‘To My Little Friend’ and ‘Roaming’ were in the position of abettor, overthrowing the structure of typical confession between narrative and listener. The image of such overthrown confession consequently ] changed what the confession was meant to be, and was comprehended as confession in a strategic form which the author really intended to.

한국 근대 문학의 형성에 대한 논의는 가라타니 고진이 ‘제도로서의 고 백’을 통한 내면의 발견을 이야기 한 이래로 그의 이론에 기대어 이루어 졌다. 고진은 일본 근대 문학은 고백이라는 제도가 오히려 고백해야 할 대상을 만들어 냈다고 하면서 근대문학의 자명성에 대한 문제를 제기하 지만 우리 근대 문학의 시작이라 할 수 있는 1910~1920년대 작품들에서 고백의 서사를 찾아보는 것은 어렵지 않다. 즉 주체의 자각을 통한 자아 의 각성과 내면의 발견을 근대 문학의 원리로 보았을 때, ‘고백’은 이러한 주체를 드러내는 가장 확실한 형식이라 할 수 있다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 이광수의 초기 단편 ｢어린 벗에게｣와 ｢방황｣그 리고 ｢윤광호｣를 중심으로 그의 문학에 있어 중요한 양식으로 자리하고 있는 고백 서사의 특징을 살펴보고 그 의미를 분석하였다. 먼저 이들 작품의 고백하는 화자는 모두 질병을 통해 낭만화 되는 경 향을 보인다. 병적 주체들은 죽음을 목도하고 있다는 점에서 고백의 진실 성을 획득하고 있다. 따라서 건전성과 미래에 대한 전망을 드러내지 못하고 있지만 질병과 죽음을 통해 화자들은 고백이 갖추어야 할 가장 중요한 진실성을 인정받고 근대적 주체들로 나아간다. 두 번째로 고백의 주체들 은 화자와 청자의 권력 구도의 전도를 통해 자신의 잘못을 고백하는 전형 적인 고백의 구조를 뒤집고 계몽적 교시자의 위치에 서 있다. 이러한 위 치의 전도는 결국 고백이 갖는 의미를 변화시키고 작가의 의도된 전략적 형식으로서의 고백으로 이해되고 있다. 그리고 마지막으로 이광수의 도덕 적 자기 완성으로서의 근대적 주체가 된 고백의 화자들은 금욕주의적 인 물들로 사랑을 인식하는데 있어 분열된 모습을 보인다. 자신들에 대한 비 난에 맞서 반성하는 고백의 주체들은 고백을 듣는 청자를 향해 강렬한 정 신 지향과 그에 비례한 육체적 사랑에 대한 부정성을 이야기하고 있다. 그러나 이러한 금욕적 태도는 화자 내부의 욕망과 충돌하면서 이광수의 계몽으로서의 고백은 균열의 지점을 드러내고 있다.
