The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediation effect of parent-child communication on the relationship between children's perceived marital conflict and their self-esteem. The subjects were 338 5th and 6th-graders from seven elementary schools located in Gyeonggi-do. Measures include Korean translated version of the Children’s Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale(CPCI)(Grych, Seid, & Fincham, 1992), the Self-Esteem Scale(SES)(Rosenberg, 1965), and the Parent-Adolescent Communication Inventory(PACI) (Barnes & Olson, 1982). The study results are summarized as follows: First, the correlation analysis showed that the perceived marital conflict were significantly correlated with parent-child communication, as well as with self-esteem. Second, the relationship between perceived marital conflict and self-esteem was partially mediated by open communication between parents and children. Also, it was found that the problem communication between parents and children partially mediated the relationship between perceived marital conflict and children's self-esteem. The result shows the importance of marital conflict as a factor influencing both parent-child communications and a child's self-esteem. In school settings, however, it is not easy for teachers to intervene marital conflict directly. It is suggested to intervene in school counseling to increase open communications and decrease problem communications between parents and their children so that children's self-esteem can be further developed.

이 연구는 아동이 지각한 부부갈등과 자아존중감 및 부모-자녀 의사소통의 상관관계를 밝히고, 아동이 지각한 부부갈등과 자아존중감의 관계에서 부모-자녀 의사소통의 매개효과를 알아보는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 경기도에 소재한 초등학교 5, 6학년 아동 338명을 대상으로 부부갈등척도(Grych, Seid, & Fincham, 1992), 자아존중감 검사(Rosenberg, 1965), 부모-자녀 의사소통 척도(Barnes & Olson, 1982)를 실시하였으며, 수집된 자료는 SPSS 18.0 프로그램을 사용하여 분석하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 아동이 지각한 부부갈등과 부모-자녀 의사소통, 자아존중감은 통계적으로 유의미한 상관관계를 보였다. 둘째, 아동이 지각한 부부갈등과 자아존중감의 관계에서 부모-자녀 의사소통의 매개효과를 살펴본 결과, 개방적 의사소통과 역기능적 의사소통 모두 부분매개효과가 유의한 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구는 아동이 지각한 부부갈등과 자아존중감, 부모-자녀 의사소통간의 관계 및 경로를 확인하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 또한 부부갈등과 아동의 자아존중감의 관계에서 개방적 의사소통과 역기능적 의사소통 각각의 중요성을 밝혀 부모-자녀간 의사소통을 변화시키기 위한 상담 개입전략을 세우는데 기초자료가 될 것으로 보인다.
