This study presented a biased information processing model to explain the peer group's cognitive biases against rejected children, which were caused by negative emotions and peer pressure. Negative emotions lead peers to selectively attend to the negative features, underestimate the importance of positive behavior, and overestimate the seriousness of negative behavior in rejected children. Furthermore, they tend to make peers inconsiderate of rejected children. Peer pressure forces peers to value the recognition and acceptance by the peer group more than the relationships with rejected children. Consequently, peers conform to the self-centered goal and unfavorable behavior toward rejected children, which were tacitly agreed on in the peer group. It was suggested that reciprocal relationship should be established between peers and rejected children to increase the peer group's liking for rejected children and that supportive peer networks should be built to promote positive peer pressure in schools.

이 연구에서는 배척아동에 대한 또래집단의 배타적 태도를 설명하기 위해 편향적 정보처리 모형을 제시하였다. 배척아동에 대한 부정적 감정과 또래압력은 배척아동과 관련된 정보의 처리과정에서 인지적 편향을 일으킨다. 부정적 감정은 또래들로 하여금 배척아동의 부정적 측면에 선별적으로 주목하게 하며 배척아동이 취한 긍정적 행동의 의미는 축소시키고 부정적 행동의 의미는 확대시킨다. 뿐만 아니라 배척아동의 입장을 배려하는 것을 저해한다. 또래압력이 작용할 때 또래들은 배척아동과의 관계보다 또래집단의 인정과 수용에 보다 큰 가치를 둔다. 이로 인해 배척아동과의 관계에 대해 또래집단 내에서 암묵적으로 합의된 자기중심적 목표와 배타적 행동에 동조하게 된다. 배척아동에 대한 호감을 증진시키기 위해서는 또래들과 배척아동 사이에 호혜적 상호작용이 반복되어야 하며, 긍정적 또래압력의 형성을 촉진하기 위해서는 배척아동에게 지지적 학교환경을 제공하는 또래 네트워크를 구성할 필요가 있음을 제안하였다.
