The Establishment of Buddhist Temples and the Inauguration of Buddhist Rituals in the Royal Capital of Hanyang in the early Joseon Dynasty - Focusing on the Establishment of Buddhist Temples by King Tae-jo -
This study is about the co-existence of the spaces for both Confucianism and Buddhism in the royal capital of Hanyang in the early Joseon Dynasty. The founders of Joseon Dynasty wanted to realize Joseon as a Confucianically ideal na-tion, and according to it, they conducted the policies of the expulsion of Buddhism such as reducing Buddhist temples approved by the government and decreasing economic founda-tion of the temples. But four Buddhist temples of Heungcheonsa, Jicheonsa, Heungboksa, and Heungdeoksa, built by king Tae-jo, played a big role for supporting Buddhist lives of people in the royal capital. Passing Yukjo street in front of the royal palace of Gyeongbok-gung, and going on straightly, Heungcheonsa and Jicheonsa were seen in a series, and then the scenes were connected to Namdaemun. East up to the royal palace of Changdeok-gung, Sungkyunkwan was located, and next to it, on the way to Dongsomun, there was Heungdeoksa. Heungboksa was located in broad land between two royal palaces. A Bud-dhist chapel in order for Kings to conduct simple Buddhist rituals was built deep inside the palace. Such establishment of Buddhist temples by king Tae-jo was an obstacle for making the identity of the royal capital of Hanyang as perfectly Confucian There were frequent Buddhist rituals in temples such as Heungcheonsa, and the scales were not small. For Bud-dhist rituals, they included efforts to overcome natural disasters like drought, funerals and sacrifices for members of the royal family, GubyeongJeongGeun(praying for recovery from diseases), and Chuksu(wishing for living long). In addition, beyond limited space of Bud-dhist temples, there were events related Buddhism in streets in the royal capital. As a result, it took quite long time to expel Buddhism as a heresy and to build a society dominated by Neo-Confucianism. It had taken about one century until Buddhist temples disappeared from the royal capital of Hanyang.
