In theological discourses in Korea, it is widely known that some leading theologians who worked in German speaking countries during the late 19th and early 20th century participated in the Social Democratic Party for improvement of the living conditions of poor labours. However, what exactly the policy and the aim of political activities of the Social Democratic Party was, and to which extent the socialist concepts were accepted by that theologians, were almost rarely investigated. Focused on Adolf von Harnack and Karl Barth who are nowadays acknowledged as the representatives of two main theological streams of 20th century, this study deals with in what extent these theologians accepted political and conceptual contents of Social Democracy of their times. By showing historical reality and theological foundations for dialogue between theology and Social Democracy, this study aims to get theological logic for the reception of Social Democracy which is often regarded as an alternative for neoliberal Capitalism.

19세기 말과 20세기 초 독일어권에서 활동했던 주요 신학자들이 독일과 스위스의 사회민주주의 정당에 가입하여 활동했다는 것은 한국의 신학계에도 잘 알려져 있는 사실이다. 하지만 당시 사회민주주의 정당의 정강과 정치적 활동들이 구체적으로 무엇이었는지, 그리고 사회민주주의를 지지했던 신학자들이 어느 정도나 사회민주주의 정당의 실천방향과 사회주의적 개념들을 수용했는지 등의 문제들은 여전히 모호한 상태로 남아 있다. 본 연구에서는 20세기 초반 신학의 두 큰 사조를 형성했다고 평가받는 하르낙과 바르트를 중심으로 살펴보면서, 당시 신학자들이 사회민주주의 정당의 정치적, 개념적 내용들을 수용했던 내적 논리들을 고찰해 보고자 한다. 신학과 사회민주주의 간에 이루어졌던 대화의 역사적 실재와 그 신학적 토대들을 분석함으로써 본 연구는 오늘날 신자유주의에 대한 대안으로 간주되는 사회민주주의 수용의 신학적 논리가 무엇인지 탐색해 보고자 한다.
