This study is to investigate Paul's attempt in his preaching to Thessalonians to form the believing community through employing two symbolic resources—narratives and ethical norms. The concept of symbolic boundaries is probably the best way to explain how Paul use the narratives and the ethical norms for the formation of the Thessalonian community. The symbolic boundaries, conceptual distinctions made by social actors, include some people and things while excluding others. The symbolic boundaries explain to the members shared characteristics and distinguish them from other groups with a sense of distinctiveness, strengthening a collective identity of the community. The symbolic boundaries also provide them with a sense of superiority, and then they could construct the community. It can be said, therefore, the creation of the symbolic boundaries is necessary for the community formation process. Paul in 1 Thessalonians preaches the kergmatic narrative and the narratives including the missionary work of Paul and his co-workers in Thessalonica. These narratives serve as the symbolic boundaries distinguishing insiders and outsiders and providing the believers with sense of superiority. Paul also preaches ethical instructions about sexual matters and brotherly love different from the norms of outside society. These common norms function as the symbolic boundaries to make internal consensus and external separation.
