Powerful and effective preaching should no longer be understood solely as a cognitive enterprise. It must also address the emotional and volitional life of the hearers and speak to both the heart and the head. In this regard, preachers today need to learn from Jonathan Edwards's affective preaching. The primary aim of this paper is to elucidate the affective aspect of Edwards's preaching. This paper explores some of the insights presented throughout Edwards's works in order to build a more complete picture of Edwards's theories on the use of imagery and typology for his affective preaching. This paper begins by recognizing the legacy of Puritan preaching and its effect on Edwards's preaching theology and style, especially his debt to his grandfather Solomon Stoddard. It also discusses Edwards's beliefs about typology, which directly influenced his use of figurative language in his sermons. Following Edwards's belief that a preacher could, and must, use language to help his congregants see and taste the divine things, the analysis focuses particularly on his use of imagery and metaphor in his sermons. I propose that since a preacher's choice of words has a profound impact on the vividness of the message, preachers today need brave new words which enable people not only to understand the message but also to experience the beauty of God in Edwardsean sense.

강력하고 효과적인 설교는 해석학적, 인지적 차원에 머물러서는 안 되며, 마음과 정서의 차원에까지 확장되어 청중들의 삶을 변화시킬 수 있어야 한다. 이 논문은 설교의 목적과 관련하여 그간 제기되었던 강해설교와 새설교학 (또 는 합리주의와 열광주의) 사이의 이분법을 극복하고 청중들로 하여금 하나님 의 말씀을 경험할 수 있도록 하기 위해 조나단 에드워즈의 설교 신학과 방법론 을 조명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 일차적으로 에드워즈 설교의 특징들을 살펴 보고, 청교도의 설교 전통, 특히 솔로몬 스토다드의 설교 유산을 이어 받은 에 드워즈가 어떻게 자신의 설교에서 풍성한 성경적인 상상력을 토대로 비유와 은유, 모형론 및 이미지를 활용한 언어를 통해 청중들의 마음의 감각을 자극할 수 있었는지를 규명한다. 모형론에 대한 에드워즈의 신학이 주관주의에 빠진 다는 비판도 있지만 그의 신학 체계 속에서 그것이 어떻게 정당화되는지를 살 펴본다. 에드워즈의 설교가 그토록 깊은 울림을 줄 수 있었던 중요한 비결 중 하나는 살아 있는 듯한 생생한 표현과 청중을 사로잡는 적합한 단어 사용이었 다. 오늘날 설교자들도 본문의 의미를 생생하게 전달하여, 본문을 이해하는데 그치지 않고 본문에 나타난 하나님의 아름다움을 경험할 수 있도록 하기 위해 감각적인 이미지들과 그림 언어들을 사용할 것을 제안한다.
