In order to introduce cultural tourism interpretation using storytelling, this study surveyed currently practiced general interpretations and storytelling interpretations separately; conducted a comparative analysis from a storytelling perspective; and drew a conclusion on the future direction. The most prominent elements from the analysis were identified to befour as follows: key concepts, connection of sequences, invoking curiosity, and exposition. In the general interpretation group, none of the four elements were executed properly; however, in the storytelling group, all four elements were applied. Through this comparative analysis, the study derived the following implications for cultural tourism interpretation using storytelling. First, in order to impress and engage the audience, the audience’s understanding of the story background should precede. Second, fragmentary knowledge and information should be connected logically and cohesively. Simply by bridging the knowledge cohesively, interpretation can be enriched. Particularly, at historic sites most of which lack story elements, the interpreter can bring out the merit of storytelling without actual elements of a story. Third, questions can be used in order to invoke curiosity and encourage the participation of tourists in the interpretation. Fourth, the interpreter can draw attention and invoke interest of the tourists by twisting the pre-existing knowledge. In cultural tourism interpretation, careful practice of above 4 suggestions is expected to transform knowledge/information-focused interpretation to more interesting, more engaging, and more meaningful storytelling cultural tourism interpretation.

본 연구는 스토리텔링 문화관광해설을 하고자 하는데 목적을 두고, 현재 이루어지는 일반적인 해설과 스토리텔링 해설을 비교․분석하였다. 관광의 트렌드는 시대와 사회의 영향에 따라 변화하고, 관광의 한 분야인 문화관광해설 또한 해설자 중심의 지식·정보 해설에서 관광객을 중심에 두고, 그들이 직접 흥미와 의미를 느낄 수 있도록 하는 해설이 점차 요구되고 있다. 이는 관객을 중심에 두고 관객과 작가 사이의 상호작용을 통하여 함께 스토리를 만들어가는 스토리텔링과 상당히 부합하는 부분이 많다. 본 연구는 현장에서 활동하는 문화관광해설사들이 지식ㆍ정보중심의 해설을 넘어 스토리텔링 문화관광해설을 위한 방향을 제시하고자 하는데 목적이 있다. 그래서 현재 현장에서 이루어지는 일반적인 해설들을 분석하고, 이것과 비교ㆍ분석 할 수 있는 스토리텔링 해설을 선정하여 두 종류의 해설을 비교분석하였다. 비교·분석 결과 스토리텔링 해설을 위한 4가지의 방향을 도출하였다. 첫 번째, 사람들이 이야기에 감동받고 몰입하기 위해서는 그 이야기의 상황에 대한 이해가 전제되어야 한다. 두 번째는 분절적으로 제공되는 지식과 정보를 개연성 있게 유기적으로 연결시켜야 한다. 세 번째는 질문을 통해 호기심을 유발하여 관광객으로 하여금 해설 속에 참여할 수 있도록 이끄는 것이다. 네 번째는 기존의 알고 있던 지식의 비틀기를 통해서 관광객의 관심을 환기시키고 흥미를 유발할 수 있다. 도출된 4가지의 방향을 유의하여 지식·정보중심의 해설이 아닌, 관광객이 좀 더 흥미를 느끼고, 해설 속에 참여하여 스스로 의미를 생성할 수 있는 스토리텔링 문화관광해설이 될 수 있을 것이라 기대한다.
