The assertion examines details that Nogi Maesuke was held in high esteem as a war hero, and his reappraise in the current of the times through Japanese textbooks, to investigate a reason why Japanese are immersed in modern war heroes and a necessary cause of a war hero in modern Japanese society. After defeat, writings about General Nogi that could be found from a second-term government designated textbook went into smoke completely. General Nogi appeared in textbooks again, by far-right organization ‘Meeting to make new historical textbook’. Although the organization introduced not patriotism, a sense of loyalty and exemplary service person but Japanese warrior’s code and personal characters, their textbook after the 2000s referred to General Nogi directly so it is obvious to arouse a glorious past when Japan consummated an entire triumph in Russo-Japanese war and made a long drive taking advantage of victory. When there is a period of unrest and state peace is risky by wars and so on all time, a hero as superman is asked for. Modern Japan is in trouble because of the rapid economic recession started from the middle of the 1990s and a big earthquake in the northeastern districts of 2011, so the resurgence for General Nogi in textbooks may follow the logic of social integration.

日本人が近代戦争英雄に大きな関心を持っている理由と現代日本社会で戦争英雄を必要とする原因を明らかにするために、本稿では乃木希典を研究対象として軍神として評価された経緯を確認し、以後どのように再評価されているかを日本の教科書を通して考察した。２期国定教科書から載せられている乃木将軍の話は、敗戦後削除されている。乃木将軍が教科書に再登場するのは、‘新しい教科書をつくる会’によってである。愛国、忠義、模範的な軍人としての姿を強調しないで、日本の武士道、個人の人格について書かれているものの、2000年代以降の歴史教科書が乃木将軍を紹介することによって、日露戦争で「完全な勝利」を収めた古きよい時代を思い出させているのは確かである。時代を問わず、社会が不安な状態であったり、戦争で国家が危機に直面していたりすると、社会は英雄を必要とした。1990年代半ばから始まった経済的な不況、2011年に発生した東北地方の大地震など、危機に直面した現代日本にとって乃木将軍が教科書に再登場したのは、社会の統合論理によるものとして見ることができるだろう。
