This paper analyzed the concept of key competencies emphasized in the 2015 moral education curriculum and discussed the role of Social and Emotional Learning(SEL) in implementing it. First, SEL suggests that our moral education needs to simplify our goals. All SEL programs are easy to implement by having a simple structure based on five key competencies. In contrast, the new moral education curriculum is expected to be confused in both understanding and practice, because key competencies has been added to the existing goal of "integration of knowing, feeling, behaving" and "major values and virtues". Second, moral education based on competency must emphasize the active execution of students rather than lectures and discussions in selecting contents and methods. Because emotional competence is not being raised through discussion or lecture. Third, SEL shows the necessity to seek convergence with the latest science in order for moral education to be more effective. Meditation can not only enhance the efficiency of moral education, but also increase motivation by demonstrating objectively that morality enhances individual 's happiness.

2015 개정 도덕과 교육과정은 사회정서학습과 유사하게 ‘교과역량’이란 개념을 도입하였다. 이에 이 글에서는 사회정서학습으로부터의 시사점을 세 측면에 걸쳐 살펴보았다. 첫째, 우리 도덕교육은 그 목표를 보다 단순화할 필요가 있다. 사회정서학습 프로그램이 다섯 가지 주요 역량에 기반한 단순한 구조를 지님으로써 실행이 용이한데 비해, 우리 도덕교육은 ‘지·정·행의 통합’ 및 ‘주요 가치·덕목’에 더하여 ‘교과역량’이 추가됨으로써 혼란스런 모습을 보인다. 둘째, 정서적 역량은 토론이나 강의를 통해 함양되는 것이 아니기에 학생들의 능동적 실행을 중시할 필요가 있다. 셋째, 뇌과학이나 명상 같은 최신 학문과의 융합을 통해 도덕교육의 효율성 및 정당성을 강화할 필요가 있다.
