1950’s Post-War Literature began with the writers who were influenced by the social impact on the Korean War. The writers, who experienced the state of the war, needed new literature which used contemporary reality. Regardless of the individual difference of the novelists, they faced up to the war and post-war situations, and formed these states with their literary imaginations. Writers are especially concerned with the essential problems of humans and observe these problems throughout their writing. With this analysis, I studied the varied consciousness reality. The split of life caused by irrational behaviors of one that thinks that totalitarianism is preferred to the individual devotes himself to the false ideology as revealed in his works written in the post-war fifties (the third period.) The desire of the characters to overcome the inconsistency of their actions with their thoughts and senses amplifies their anxiety, anguish, nihility, and frustration. That is, typical aftereffects of the war such as violence, dehumanization, limitation of existence, confliction of ideology, secularization, and aimless of life are well demonstrated in his novels. The purpose of this these is to review the world through the senses of the writer Kim Dong-Lee by scrutinizing his novels. His novels develop diversely in their subject matter, as a result of the fact that the writer himself had experienced the rule of Japanese imperialism, the liberation from it, the Korean War and tragic national division. The antagonistic tendency in his novels is presented with various transformations in both the form and the content of his works, interrelated with the different historical realities ranging from the rule of imperialism to the national division that the writer had faced.

본고는 김동리의 전후소설 속에 내재되어 있는 주제의식과 작가의 현실인식의 양상을 살펴보고자 한다. 그의 전후작품에 드러난 특성을 ‘전쟁의 비극성과 휴머니즘’, ‘부조리 한 삶과 허무의식’, ‘위악적 현실과 관념적 실존’으로 나누어 볼 수 있다. 그동안 작가는 ‘운명’ 이라는 주제를 가지고 인간이 거스를 수 없는 운명의 힘을 형상 화하였으며 그 운명에 따라 살아가는 비극적인 인간들의 삶을 조명한 작가로 평가받고 있다. 이러한 그의 초기 소설관이 전쟁을 경험하는 시공간에서 어떻게 변화하고 있는지 를 살펴보는 일은 그의 전체 소설사적 측면에서 연구의 가치가 있다고 본다. 전쟁의 체험은 인간의 삶을 안팎으로 지배하고, 인간 존재 조건의 변화를 초래한다. 일상이 파괴되고 의지할 만한 어떤 규범도 남아있지 않으며, 미래에 대한 어떠한 전망도 가질 수 없는 상황에서 문학은 인간의 존재조건과 본질에 대한 근원적인 물음을 제기할 수밖에 없는 것이다.
