The aim of this essay is to seek a rational design paradigm of the ‘sustainable building.’ This building is an important application of the ‘sustainable development’ which preserves the survivability of future generations from the perspective of philosophy of culture. In order to achieve it, I performed the three tasks in the following text. First, I made it clear that the ethos of the Western Enlightenment, seeking the reification and domination of nature, is both the principal mental cause of today’s global ecological crisis and the original background of the birth of the ‘sustainable development’ discourse. Second, I emphasized that aiming at the ‘balanced human coexistence with nature’ is a defining character of the ‘sustainable development’ discourse. Third, I proposed some design principles of the ‘sustainable building’ as the important applications of the ‘sustainable development’ discourse. Here I especially referred to Jason F. McLennan’s design philosophy and its principle of the respect for nature. According to this principle the ‘maximization of architectural performance’ and the ‘minimization of environmental damages’ are the two major requisites for the ‘sustainable building’. This basis illustrated some types of ‘biomimicry’ design which apply the ecological features of a certain animal individual or colony. Furthermore, the circular recycling economy of nature and the natural survival know-how of wildlife is applied to the architecture in various ways. Like this, the key task that we have to take upon ourselves for our future is not the ‘regressive reduction’ of technology, but its ‘forward-looking reengineering.’ Plainly speaking, we could never achieve our aim, that is, the ‘balanced human coexistence with nature’ without the ceaseless development of the eco-friendly energy technologies contrasted with the existing self-destructive ones. This is why we should support and encourage the various sorts of dynamic research and trials for the technological embodiment of the ‘sustainable building’ today.

이 글의 목적은 미래세대의 생존 기회를 박탈하지 않는 ‘지속가능한 개발’의 중요한 응용 사례로서 ‘지속가능한 건축’의 합리적 설계 패러다임을 문화철학적 시각으로 모색 해 보는 것이다. 이 목적을 달성하기 위해 필자는 본문에서 세 가지 작업을 차례로 수행 했다. 첫째, 필자는 전 자연의 물화와 지배를 추구해 온 서구적 계몽의 에토스가 오늘날 의 지구적 생태 위기를 초래한 문명사적 주요인이요 ‘지속가능한 개발’ 담론의 근원적 탄생 배경임을 밝히고자 했다. 둘째, 필자는 ‘인간과 자연의 균형적 공존’에 대한 지향이 ‘지속가능한 개발’의 정의적(定義的) 특성임을 강조했다. 셋째, 필자는 ‘지속가능한 개 발’ 담론의 중요한 응용 사례로서 ‘지속가능한 건축’의 설계와 관련된 몇 가지 원칙적 차원의 생각들을 제안해 보았다. 여기에서 필자는 특히 ‘건축 성능의 극대화’와 ‘환경 훼손의 최소화’를 ‘지속가능한 건축’의 양대 요건으로 보았던 제이슨 맥레넌(Jason F. McLennan)의 설계 철학과 자연 존중 원리에 착안하여 좁게는 특정 동물 개체나 군체의 생태적 특징을, 넓게는 대자연의 순환적 재활용 경제와 야생 동식물의 자연적 생존법을 건축에 다양한 방식으로 응용하는 ‘생체 모방’ 설계의 몇 가지 방법들을 예시해 보았다. 이처럼 우리가 인류의 미래를 위하여 고민할 과제는 기술의 ‘퇴행적 축소’가 아닌 ‘전향 적 재설계’이다. 단적으로 말해 우리는 종래의 자멸적 에너지 기술과 경쟁할 친환경 에너 지 기술의 부단한 개발이 없이는 ‘인간과 자연의 균형적 공존’이라는 목표를 절대로 성취 할 수 없는 것이다. 이 점은 오늘날 우리가 ‘지속가능한 건축’의 기술적 구현을 위한 다양하고도 역동적인 연구와 실험을 지원하고 장려해야 하는 이유이기도 하다.
