The 2013 Suncheon-Bay Garden Expo, Korea, was successfully held from Apr. 20th, to Oct. 20th 2013. With approval from AIPH and the Korean government the Garden Expo. showcased 83 gardens from 23 countries over 6 months. These gardens provided beauty and various opportunities to develop industries related to the garden. The Garden Expo. was successful as a place that increased lifestyles. This converged with industry including: exhibition, culture, healing, beautiful flowers and trees, garden articles, and garden facilities. The area was eventually named the Suncheon-bay Garden and was designated National Garden No. 1. The history and meaning of Suncheon-bay Garden are outlined here: 1. Suncheon-bay Garden is the new paradigm that contributes to the sustainable development of Suncheon with the preservation of Suncheon Bay 2. The Success of the Suncheon-bay Garden Expo. was not a coincidence. It was the result of the cooperation of all the citizens and public offices. 3. Suncheon Bay Garden, as National Garden No. 1, has a difficult mission that should develop garden culture and garden industries in Korea, Asia and the world. 4. Designing gardens and gardening give the pleasure of creation. Spreading a garden culture is the foundation of creating a healthy urban society.

순천만국제정원박람회는 세계 5대 연안습지의 하나인 순천만의 자연생태계를 보전하기 위하여 계획된 생태문화박람회로서 성공적으로 마감되었다. 이러한 성과를 바탕으로박람회장을 순천만 정원으로 명명하였으며 2015년 9월 5일 국가정원 제1호로 지정되었다. 따라서 국가정원으로서 순천만 정원의 역사와 의의를 조명하였다. 정원의 도시 순천은 자연과 인간이 공존하는 도시, 즉 시민이 건강하고 행복한 도시를추구하는 것으로 순천만 정원의 시작은 순천만 보전과 함께 순천시의 지속가능한 발전을견인하는 새로운 패러다임이었다. 정원박람회의 성공은 우연히 이루어진 것이 아니며각계각층의 시민과 공공이 이룬 협력의 성과이다. 국가정원으로 지정된 순천만 정원은 지역을 넘어 국가와 세계로 정원문화와 정원산업을 융성케 해야 하는 무거운 사명을 안고 있다. 그러나 정원을 만들고 가꾸는 일은 창조의 즐거움이며 정원문화의 확산은 건강한 사회를 이루는 초석이 될 것임을 강조한다.
