This essay is meant to observe how Karatani Kojin, a Japanese famous philosopher, rebuilt the metaphysics of communism in a Kantian perspective. He confesses that he came to reread Immanuel Kant on the threshold of the collapse of the real socialism in 1989. And it makes me question why he should focus on Kant, not Karl Marx. Reflecting that we cannot motivate ourselves to revolutionize the capitalist economy by relying only on the Marxist stereotyped criticism of it, he set to reconsider Marx from a Kantian angle. As a result, he finds out that the communism, for Marx, was nothing but the realization of Kantian categorical imperative: “Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, never merely as a means to an end, but always at the same time as an end.” For Marx, the communism was an extension of Kant’s ethics. Kantian categorical imperative(“treat humanity as an end as well as a means”) implies that the capitalist relations of production should be revolutionized because it necessarily makes us to treat humanity only as a means through the commercialization and division of human labor. And this leads to the termination of the capital vs. wage labor relationship and the abolishment of state. In this way, Marx imagined a new system of human solidarity as an alternative for a state. For him, communism was a voluntary association of free and equal producers. He expected that these associations would replace the states all over the world. Kojin imagines a ‘global community’ named ‘association’ as the 21st century version of the world republic which Kant pictured in the 18st century. And he calls his own thoughts like this as the ‘associationism.’

본 논문의 목적은 가라타니 고진이 코뮤니즘이라는 형이상학을 칸트적 입장에서 어떻게 재건하려고 했는지를 살펴 보는 것이다. 그는 1989년 현실 사회주의의 붕괴 를 기점으로 칸트를 다시 읽기 시작했다고 한다. 여기서 우리는 한 가지 의문을 떠 올리게 된다. 왜 마르크스가 아니고 하필 칸트인가 하는 점이다. 그는 그간의 마르크스적 자본제 경제 비판으로는 자본주의를 변화시키는 데 한계 가 있다는 것을 반성하고, 마르크스를 칸트적 입장에서 다시 생각해보기 시작한다. 거기서 발견한 것은 마르크스에게 코뮤니즘이란 칸트적 지상명령, “너의 인격과 타 자의 인격에서 인간성을 결코 수단으로서만이 아니라 동시에 항상 목적으로 대하라” 라는 윤리적 문제 이외에 다른 것이 아니라는 점이다. 마르크스에게 코뮤니즘은 칸트적 지상명령, 즉 칸트 윤리학의 연장이다. ‘타자를 수단으로서만이 아니라 목적으로 대하’는 칸트의 지상명령은 노동력의 상품화와 분업화 등, 타자를 수단으로 삼을 수밖에 없는 자본제적 생산관계를 바꾸라는 의미가 담겨 있다는 것이다. 이는 곧 자본-임노동 관계의 폐기를 요구하게 되고 곧바로 국가의 폐기로 이어지게 된다. 그리하여 마르크스는 국가를 대체할 새로운 연합체를 구상했다. 마르크스가 생각 한 코뮤니즘이란 ‘자유롭고 평등한 생산자 연합사회(association)’이다. 이러한 소 비-생산 협동조합의 연합사회가 전 지구로 확대되어 국가를 대체하는 것이 코뮤니 즘이다. 가라타니 고진은 칸트가 구상했던 세계공화국의 21세기 버전으로 ‘어소시에 이션’이라 불리는 ‘지구적 공동체’를 구상하고 있으며, 이를 실현하기 위한 자신의 사상을 ‘어소시에이션이즘’이라고 부른다.
