This paper was written to look at the significance and contribution of human geography by summarizing and analyzing the accomplishments and achievements of the work of the Institute of Mt. Jiri cultural studies for the past 10 years. For this reason, we have collected research data on geography studies. In this paper, I present the meaning of the academic achievement by extracting the topic of major achievement through various activities, books, and articles corresponding to the agenda. Finally, I have searched for limitations and complementary points of the study of human geography. This summarizes the main themes of human geography studies of Mt. Jiri: ‘the identity of the Mt. Jiri cultural landscape and the world heritage value of Mt. Jiri’, ‘the Korean Cheonghak-dong utopia’, the ‘approach to cultural ecology of Mt. Jiri feng shui’, the ‘mountain topography’, and ‘modern interpretation of Dureyjeonji’, ‘the residents life history through the premodern travel records of Mt. Jiri’, and the ‘comparison of Mt. Jirisan and Mt. Halla’, etc. Mt. Jiri is different from the mountains of the high and rugged barracks of the Himalayas. The Alps are only a spectacle to be seen from afar because they are in the realm of God or the domain of the exploration of Alpinism. On the other hand, Mt. Jiri is a “people’s mountain”. At this point, it becomes clear that Mt. Jiri should be the starting point of human geography research. I think the reason is because Mt. Jiri is a mountain of soil. Mt. Jiri is located in the southern part of the warm Korean peninsula. It is a mountain made up of numerous peaks and valleys. Because it is a mountain, it has a diverse and abundant ecological environment compared to a mountain like Seoraksan. The abundant ecological environment of Jirisan is the source of the concept of the “abundant ‘people’s mountain’ ”, which can bear wind, clouds, rain, snow, grass, trees, worms, livestock, and humans. Although the ecological characteristics of Jirisan are pointed out in the study of human geography in the Mt. Jiri humanities research, it is necessary to clarify the link between nature and culture: human geographical discussion cannot be done deeply. In the last 10 years, the human geography research of Mt. Jiri became the foundation and cornerstone of the ‘humanities of the mountains’. The ‘mountain studies’ contributed greatly to bringing the “humanities of the mountains” to the field of discourse. In order to further activate this research climate, convergence research and discussion among the those studying multiple disciplines should make geography more concrete.

본고는 지리학에 있어서 지리산지에 대한 연구동향과 인문지리학 연구 성과와 전망을 검토한 것이다. 우선 이러한 검토를 위하여 지리산지에 대한 자연지리학과 인문지리학 연구동향을 나누어 살펴보았으며, 특히 인문지리학 연구에 대하여 보다 구체적으로 고찰 하다. 인문지리학 연구는 크게 역사지리, 문화지리, 전통지리 측면으로 구분하여 살펴보았 다. 역사지리 연구는 조선 후기에서 근대에 이르는 시기에 지리산지의 농업과 촌락에 대한 문화생태학적 고찰이 있었으며, 문화지리 연구는 신문화지리학적 관점에서 지리산 을 유토피아에서 국립공원으로 변모하는 과정을 통해 지리산을 텍스트로 한 경관 읽기를 시도한 것이었다. 지리산인문학 연구에 있어서 인문지리학 연구의 대표적인 성과는 전통지리 측면에서 의 연구이다. 그 연구 내용은 ‘지리산 문화경관의 정체성과 세계유산적 가치’, ‘한국인의 이상향 청학동’ ‘지리산 풍수의 문화생태학적 접근’, ‘산지(山誌)의 개념 정립과 두류전 지의 현대적 해석’, ‘지리산 유람록에 나타난 생활사’, ‘지리산과 한라산 명산문화 비교’ 등에 대한 것으로 요약할 수 있다. 이와 같은 인문지리학 연구는 ‘산의 인문학’이 정립되는 계기가 되었을 뿐만 아니라 그 초석이 되었으며, ‘산학(山學)’을 담론의 장으로 등장시키게 되었다는 데에 기여한 바가 크다. 지리산은 한국을 대표하는 ‘사람의 산’이요, ‘산학’의 산실이다. ‘사람의 산’, ‘산의 인문학’을 구체화하는 데 있어서 학제 간은 물론이며, 지리학 내에서도 보다 많은 자연지리학과의 융합적 연구 및 토론이 요구된다.
