This study set out to roughly sort the findings of Mt. Jiri research conducted by the Jirisan Region Cultural Research Institute (hereinafter “the Institute”) for the last nine years and propose its future tasks. The Institute is the nation’s first and only research institute (about mountain culture) that was formed by ten doctoral researchers from various fields: literature, history, philosophy, geography, and ecology. The Institute was formed to conduct research on Mt. Jiri in 2007. The Institute has carried out ongoing research on humanities related to Mt. Jiri. It has achieved eye-opening results including approximately 300 research papers, 33 collections of data, 11 collections of research, eight collections of translations, seven collections of liberal arts, and one collection of villages. Mt. Jiri’s culture is more closely related to human life than any other mountain in the nation’s history. These studies preserve a rich repository of materials related to the intellectual activities of intellectuals that were active around the region of the mountain during the Joseon period. There has been, for instance, active research conducted across various fields: travel journals and poems after a trip to Mt. Jiri, the Nammyeong School and the Nosa School that were active around Yeongnam and Honam within the perimeter of Mt. Jiri, and the activities of Donghak and North Korean partisans in modern and contemporary times. They established an academic foundation for “humanities of the mountains” or “research on mountain studies” in the academic circles of South Korea, where there had been no research in humanities on the mountain. This made a huge contribution to the facilitation and spread of interest in research about other mountain cultures in the nation. The present study also reviewed tasks for ongoing research for the future. It is most important that there should be conditions arranged for researchers to conduct ongoing studies. It is also critical to secure a broader scope of new researchers to conduct research on Mt. Jiri. Those efforts should extend to comparative studies between Mt. Jiri and other celebrated mountains home and abroad. This desperately calls for in-depth research in each field and joint research between different disciplines.

본고는 지리산권문화연구단이 지난 9년여 동안 수행한 지리산 관련 연구 성과를 개략 적으로 정리하고 향후 추진해야 할 과제를 살펴본 것이다. 지리산권문화연구단은 2007 년에 문학ㆍ역사ㆍ철학ㆍ지리ㆍ생태 등 여러 분과의 박사급 연구자 10여 명이 지리산 연구를 위해 결성한 국내 최초이자 유일의 산악문화 연구단이다. 지리산권문화연구단에서는 그동안 지리산 관련 인문분야의 연구를 지속적으로 수행 하여, 대략 연구논문 300편, 자료총서 33권, 연구총서 11권, 번역총서 8권, 교양총서 7권, 마을총서 1권이라는 괄목할 만한 성과를 산출하다. 지리산은 역사적으로 국내 여느 산에 비해 인간의 삶과 밀접하게 연계된 공간이다. 따라서 지리산권역을 중심으로 활동했던 조선시대 지식인의 지적 활동과 관련한 자료가 풍부하게 남아 있다. 예컨대 지리산을 유람하고 남긴 유람록이나 기행시, 지리산권역 ㆍ호남을 중심으로 활동했던 南冥學派와 蘆沙學派, 근ㆍ현대의 東學과 빨치산의 활동 등에 대해 다양한 분야의 연구 가 활발하게 이루어졌다. 이는 산 연구에 있어 인문분야 연구자가 없던 국내 학계에 ‘산의 인문학’ 또는 ‘산학(山學) 연구’의 학술적 토대를 구축하고, 나아가 국내 여타 산 문화 연구로의 관심을 촉진시키고 확산하는 데에 크게 기여하다. 그리고 향후 이의 지속적 연구를 위한 과제도 점검하다. 무엇보다 연구자가 이를 지속적으로 연구할 수 있는 여건이 형성되어야 하고, 나아가 지리산 연구를 수행할 새로 운 연구자를 폭넓게 확보해야 한다. 또한 지리산을 넘어 국내외 명산과의 비교 연구로까 지 나아가야 한다. 이를 위해서는 각 분야별 심화 연구 및 분과 간 공동연구가 절실히 요청된다.
