There were countless activities of nuns which became the figure indicators of recent Korean Buddhism but the sad reality was that they did not remain as records. In particular, the reality is that the activities of Korean nuns of many generations and their ideas and ideologies have not been studied although they are discolored, buried and forgotten. Introducing Seon Master Sangryun with the nun status of modern Korean Buddhism, we examined the strategy of dharma-transmission suitable for the times and depth of thoughts based on his deeds and life. By examining the aspiration such as Buddhist service and idea of ‘Jatailsiseongbuldo (I and others become Buddha at a time)’, the ultimate enlightenment through Seon and chanting, the nun became a model for us living in modern times. Due to the lack of data that allow us to trace the deeds and ideas of a nun who actually passed away, it is not easy to describe and highlight the achievements of the nun in detail. Since there are no records left, we could help but use anecdotes by word of mouth. Fortunately, we could examine the traces of the nun a bit through the book ‘I am happy more and more’ written by venerable Hyunam, the chief of Beopryunsa Temple to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Beopryunsa Temple opening while praising the past of her teacher nun. Now our challenge is to organize and record data to celebrate the achievements of the nun. The nun summarized the practice virtues to three but devoted herself while mastering all fields. She always practice generosity to her disciple nuns and practiced altruistic behavior in the front line of propagation. The nun, who was never lazy in the front line of propagation and devotion following her teacher, always reminded us that work and devotion are one not two while always saying ‘I am happy because I have a lot of things to do’. Through this paper, we hope that data and related literature records for tracing the deeds and ideals of venerable Sangryun will increase day by day and give a great help to Korean modern nun practice

이 논문은 한국 근⋅현대 비구니 선불교의 중흥조라 평가되는 법희선사의제자인 동시에 법난을 겪으며 몸소 희생했던 상륜의 행적과 수행에 따른 사상을 살펴본 논문이다. 법희선사를 통해 알게 된 상륜의 행적과 수행은 현대 불교의 근간이 될 수 있음을 다분히 느끼며 본고에 임하였다. 상륜의 생애 마지막 불사인 법륜사를 장엄도량으로 만들기 위해 선과 일을 통한 불사가 둘이 아닌 선적경지임을 보여주었다. 법맥을 살펴봄에 있어서는 뚜렷한 사례가 보여지지 않으나 만공선사에서부터 시작되어 수덕사 문중의 벽초선사로까지 이어진 법맥은 비구니 법희선사로 이어졌다. 이러한 사례의 정황을 고려해 볼 때 그의 제자인 상륜으로까지 이러한 선적영향이 다분히 미쳤음을 알 수 있다. 법희선사를 마지막 열반까지 모시며 지킨 분도 상륜이지만 법희선사의 유품 상륜은 법희선사의 가사, 거울, 석문의범, 수행요집, 겨울누비이불, 법맥계보 등을 유품으로 가지고 있었으니 법희선사는 상륜에게 이것을 받아 지니길 바란다고 말하고 입적하였다. <사진 1, 2, 3, 4, 5>는 뒷장에 첨부함. 까지도 상륜에게 전해져 내려왔다. 상륜은 수행중 선열의 기쁨을 느끼고 은사인 법희선사의 뒤를 잇기 위해 평생을 수행정진의 원력 속에 한 치도 삶을 헛되이 보내지 않으며 늘 선과 일은 하나임을 강조하였다. 또한 대중 수행공간을 만들기 위해 끝없는 도량의 장엄불사를 시작으로 원력불사가 곧 수행이고, 수행이 곧 원력불사임을 보여주었다. 백장회해의 선농일치사상처럼 상륜은 선과 일을 늘 겸수하였으며 이를 통해 법륜사의 대 가람을 조성하였다. 한국 최대의 아(亞)자형 법당을 조성함으로써 전법도량으로써의 면모를 보여주었으며 이 시대의 불사를 통한 전법이 곧 수행임을 깨닫게 해주었다. 상륜의 총체적인 사상을 살펴보면 화엄과 선을 위주로 수행하며 두루두루 회통한 현대 비구니라 피력할 수 있다. 그리고 만년의 대가람을 조성하기 위해서는 수행정진 속에서 계율이 밑바탕이 되어야 함을 말씀하시며 어려운 여건 속에서도 목숨과도 같이 계율을 지키던 분이기도 하다. 선과 일은 하나라 하며, 일이 많아 참 좋다고 제자들에게 늘 강조하셨던 그의 생애와 수행 그리고 불사를 통해 비구니로써 법륜사 대가람을 일군 상륜의 위상을 소개하고자 한다.
