Baek Yong-seong was a pioneer who has involved lay women in zen community of modern Korean buddhism. Despite the high interest in various achievements of Ven. Yong-seong, this topic has received little attention. This paper deals with zen practice of lay women as an extension of his zen popularization movement. His activities related to it can be divided into three major stages. Firstly in the 1910s, we can see his strong missionary activities in Seoul and establishment of the Zen society of women in Muju area. In the next decade, it is noteworthy that both of nun and lay woman participated in the Society for 10,000 days of zen practice as the official member. And finally, in the 1930s, the activities of Taegak-Kyo zen society of women were prominent. We can figure out the specific situation about lay women's zen practice through the newly published series of ven. Baek Yong-seong that contains a wealth of important material, for example Banghamnok and newspaper articles, statistics of that time. Yong-seong had established many groups of zen practice for monk, and then, he expanded zen practice membership to lay women. The S(s->S)ociety for 10,000 days of zen practice reflected the ideal orientation of Yong-seong, so it was his will that women has included in the group. Taegak-Kyo zen society of women had Banghamnok, the register of zen practitioners of retreat. The literature material shows the composition of that society and status of women. Taegak-Kyo women not only sponsored Yong-seong, but also demonstrated leadership in new modern zen culture. This characteristic needs to be further illuminated.

근대 한국불교 여성들의 선수행에 있어서 백용성은 가장 선구자적인 위치에 있다. 용성의 다양한 업적에 대한 많은 평가가 있었지만 그 속에서 이러한 여성의 선수행 부분은 거의 주목되지 못했으며, 이 활동의 맥락과 의의 또한 조명되지 못했다. 본 연구에서는 이 주제를 백용성의 임제종 운동 및 참선 대중화 운동의 연장선 속에서 고찰해 보았다. 시기별로 크게 3단계로 구분할 수 있는데, 우선, 1910년대는 경성에서의 왕성한 포교활동 그리고 무주지방에서 확인되는 부인선회를 볼 수 있다. 그리고 1920년대는 만일참선결사에 참여한 여성수행자들이 주목되며, 그리고 마지막으로 30년대는 대각교의 부인선원 활동이 두드러져, 이를 중심으로 하나씩 살펴보았다. 근대 한국불교의 여성 수행은 매우 선명한 문화적 현상이었음에도 남아있는 자료가 많지 않아 별로 주목받지 못했던 것이 사실이다. 하지만 최근 발간된 『백용성대종사 총서』에는 특히 『신발굴자료편』이 추가되었는데, 여기에 만일참선결사와 대각교 부인선원의 방함록과 당시 기사 및 통계자료들이 포함되어 있어, 이를 활용하여 더욱 구체적으로 그 정황을 이해할 수 있다. 용성의 참선 대중화 운동은 경성을 중심으로 이루어진 특징이 있으며, 재가자들의 적극적인 후원으로 시작된 것으로 볼 수 있다. 그리고 비구승들을 주요 대상으로 개설되었던 선회(禪會)는 드디어 재가여성들을 위한 선회로 확장되었는데, 1918년 설립된 무주 부인선회가 그 효시로 추정된다. 1925년에 설립된 만일참선결사에서도 재가 여성들의 참여가 확인되었다. 이 결사는 선수행과 함께 계율 준수를 중시하는 이상적인 공동체를 지향했는데, 여기에 비구니와 재가여성들이 당당한 일원으로 참여했던 것은 용성의 의지가 반영된 것으로 생각된다. 마지막으로 대각교 부인선원의 방함록은 근대 불교여성들의 선수행 양태를 보다 구체적으로 보여준다. 부인선원의 여성들은 백용성의 적극적인 후원자이면서 동시에 새로운 근대 선불교 문화 속의 당당한 한 주체로서 리더쉽을 발휘하기도 했다.
