This paper is the study of the moral metaphysical implications of Mencius' 'the Pure Heart of a Newborn Babe'. Looking at the contents of the overall Mencius, the 'Pure Heart of a Newborn Babe' of the baby's heart is a metaphorical expression of the mind of an adult. It is the 'True Intention of Morality(道德本心)' that has the innate and a priori moral intuition and the ability of moral practice. And this mind becomes the moral subject that autonomously obeys the moral law while creating a moral law by itself as a conscience, that is, the true intention of morality itself. This can be explained in the meaning of moral metaphysics through the argument of 'Four clues of virtue (四端之心)', Liang-Zhi(良知)', 'Prima Praecepta(良能)' and 'Rational Attitude(大體)', 'Emotional Desire(小體)' claimed by Mencius. In other words, the 'Pure Heart of a Newborn Babe' has the moral metaphysical position as a proposition about morality essence of human.

본 논문은 맹자(孟子)가 언급한 ‘적자지심(赤子之心)’의 도덕형이상학적 함의를 고찰한 연구이다. 전반적인 󰡔맹자󰡕의 내용을 살펴보면, 갓난아이의 마음인 ‘적자지심’은 성인(聖人) 또는 대인(大人)의 마음을 은유적으로 표현한 말로써, 선천적이면서 선험적인 도덕직관과 도덕실천의 능력을 갖추고 있는 도덕본심이다. 그리고 이러한 마음은 양심, 즉 도덕본심 그 자체로서 스스로 도덕법칙을 창조함과 동시에 그 도덕법칙을 자율적으로 준수하는 도덕주체가 된다. 이것은 맹자가 주장한 사단지심(四端之心), 양지(良知)와 양능(良能), 그리고 대체(大體)와 소체(小體)의 논증을 통하여 도덕형이상학의 의미로 해명될 수 있다. 결국 맹자의 ‘적자지심’은 인간의 도덕본질에 대한 명제로서 도덕적 원리 및 의무, 그리고 도덕직관과 도덕실천의 의미를 모두 포함하는 도덕형이상학적 위상을 갖는다고 할 수 있다.
