The aim of this paper is to distill the operational mechanisms of community schools in rural area through topic-centered life history research of school teachers who had successfully operated school-community linkage. The specific results and conclusions are as follows. Firstly, the school teachers as research participants had transformed existing schools into community learning centre or hub to link school and community. Specifically, they had expanded social capital of students. Also, they had become a trigger to build a community school, and had maintained democratic governance to make a successful community school. Secondly, the participants had connected ways of knowing and living in the community with official school curriculum to make a school-community linkage and partnership. They had realized community school curriculum by personal and material resources of community. Also, they had regarded community as an alternative curriculum, and had stressed learning centered curriculum and instruction, which is based on basic and fundamental education. Thirdly, the teachers in community schools had endured the ambiguity of linking school with community by endless commitment and waiting. And they had pursued the sustainability of community school through empowerment and trust to colleagues and parents. The results of this paper will be a guideline and example to make a school-community linkage and partnership in rural area through capturing operational mechanisms of successful community schools.

이 연구의 목적은 한때 농어촌지역에서 마을학교를 성공적으로 운영했던 초중등 교원들(N=8)의 생애담을 해석적으로 분석함으로써 ‘좋은’ 소규모 마을학교의 운영 기제를 추출하는 데 있다. 구체적인 연구결과 및 결론을 제시하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 연구 참여자들은 소규모 학교를 마을에 연결하기 위하여 기존의 학교를 지역사회의 학습 센터로 전환하였다. 즉, 그들은 성공적인 마을학교를 만들기 위하여 학생들의 사회적 자본을 확충하였고, 마을학교의 형성을 위한 방아쇠 역할을 하였으며, 학생 자치 및 학교 자치를 중심으로 민주적인 거버넌스를 구축하였다. 둘째, 연구 참여자들은 농어촌지역의 소규모 학교를 마을에 연결하기 위하여 마을에서의 앎과 삶을 학교의 공식적인 교육과정에 연결하였다. 즉, 그들은 마을의 인적 및 물적 자원을 통하여 학교의 교육과정을 실현하고, 마을 자체를 교육과정으로 간주하였으며, 기초 및 기본교육을 중심으로 학생들이 배움의 주인이 되는 교육과정을 실현하였다. 셋째, 연구 참여자들은 헌신과 기다림으로 마을학교 형성 과정의 모호함을 인내하였고, 학부모에 대한 권한부여와 신뢰를 통해 학교교육의 지속가능성을 추구하였다. 이 연구의 결과는 성공적인 소규모 마을학교의 운영 기제를 포착함으로써 농어촌지역 소규모 학교와 마을의 상생과 협력을 위한 교육적 통찰을 제공할 수 있을 것이다.
