This study tested the use of drawing as a measure of the acculturation of Asian immigrant youth. The rationale of the study is to establish whether the Acculturation Bridge Drawing (ABD) is a valid measure of the level of acculturation in an immigrant population, particularly with regard to Asian immigrant youth. The level of acculturation was measured using the Suinn-Lew Asian Self Identity Acculturation Scale (SL-ASIA) developed by Suinn, Ahuna, and Khoo (1992), which was revised for children. A total of 40 Asian immigrant youths, 16 females and 24 males aged 6 through 18 from China, Taiwan, and Korea completed both the ABD and the revised SL-ASIA. A modest relationship between the ABD and the revised SL-ASIA scores was found.

본 연구는 미국 내 아시아계 이민 청소년들의 문화동화(文化同化) 척도로서 그림검사의 활용 가능성을 분석한 것이다. 구체적으로, ‘문화동화 다리 그림(Acculturation Bridge Drawing: ABD)’이 이민자, 특히 아시아계 이민 청소년들의 문화동화 정도에 대한 적절한 척도로 활용될 수 있는가를 알아보았다. 문화동 화의 정도는 수인(Suinn), 아후나(Ahuna) & 구(Khoo)가 개발한 ‘Suinn-Lew 아시아계 자아정체성 문화 동화 척도(Suinn-Lew Asian Self Identity Acculturation Scale: SL-ASIA)’를 청소년들에 맞게 개정하여 측정하였다(1992). 6살부터 18살까지의 16명의 여자와 24명의 남자, 총 40명의 중국, 대만, 한국 출신의 아시아계 이민 청소년들을 대상으로 ABD와 개정 SL-ASIA 설문조사가 행해졌다. 그 결과, ABD와 개정 SL-ASIA 사이에 유의미한 상관관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다.
