This article focuses on the issue of Social Dancehalls, which completely prohibited by the government in times of war, to discuss the Entertainment and Amusement Trades Control Act in Times of War in Japan. By analyzing the documents “The survey of The Social Dancehalls (1937-1938)” written by Keihokyoku of Home Ministry, this article discusses the background and the process of the prohibition of Social dance. These are 3 points ; 1. Right after the outbreak of Japan-China war, Keihokyoku required local polices to provide reports of sexual immoral cases occurred in Social Dancehalls, then decided on their “gradual prohibition policy” against Social dance in 1938 Jun. 2. The prohibition policy mainly enforced to belong and bind in “Ie” upon women and youths by abolishing Social Dancehalls, because governors regarded relations between the sexes in there as dangerous, which would interfere “Kazoku-seido (Japanese family system)”. 3. Also citizens criticized Social Dancehalls, and the criticism was also connected to its of communism. Some of them declare the abolishment of Dancehalls, because it was used as communists contact. Keihokyoku’s decision was under an influence of these citizens. In conclusion, the prohibition against Social Dancehalls mainly aimed to preclude such behaviors and thoughts as communism or romantic love which interfere Japanese Nationalism based on Kazokuseido.
