Namahage is a Jeongwol Daeboreum (festival held during the first full moon on the lunar new year) event that has been traditionally passed down at what is currently known as the Oga Peninsula, and Namahage refers to the ‘Inner Seeking God’. Youths dressed as Namahage visit each house in the village inquiring ‘Are there any lazy children? Are there any crying children?’ to instruct and intimate young children. This is not only a form of an intangible cultural asset, but currently the Namahage is a character that symbolizes ‘hyun’ and is highly recognized around the nation. In this research study, the ‘folk’ value of Namahage is examined and how Namahage is applied within the cultural contents that raises and propagates awareness of these values within the nation and internationally is explored. It can be said that the aspect of Namahage that applies it as a cultural contents where its values are well manifested as universal values through folk values through familial education is its most compelling application. In this research study, the various different forms and their functions through the Namahage-seto Matsuri, which raises awareness for ‘regional culture’ and Matsuri RE-DESIGN, which raises awareness for ‘Japanese culture’ were explored.

나마하게는 원래 아키타현 오가반도에서 오래전부터 전승된 정월 대보름 행사이자 이 민속행사에 나타나는 내방신을 가리킨다. 나마하게로 분장한 마을 청년들이 각 집에 방문하여 ‘게으른 아이는 없느냐?’ '우는 아이는 없느냐?'라고 아이들을 훈시하고 겁박하는 모습으로 잘 알려져 있다. 현재는 무형문화재로서 뿐만 아니라 현을 상징하는 캐릭터가 되어 전국적으로 상당히 높은 지명도를 지니고 있다. 본고에서는 나마하게의 ‘민속’적 가치를 규명하고, 그 가치가 지역과 국가를 대외적으로 알리는 문화콘텐츠 속에서 어떻게 활용되는지를 고찰하였다. 나마하게는 가정교육이라는 보편적 가치를 민속 문화로 잘 드러낸다는 점이 문화콘텐츠로 활용되는 가장 큰 원동력이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 이러한 민속이 ‘지역문화’를 알리는 나마하게세토마츠리(namahage-seto matsuri)와, ‘일본문화’를 알리는 ‘일본의 마쓰리 RE-DESIGN 프로젝트’에서 어떠한 형태로 변용되어 기능하는지를 살펴보았다.
