This study focused on two Korean presidents who manage a company(KP1, KP2).Analyzing the qualitative data by using ethnography approach and theory of interaction competence, this study investigated the business process in Japanese and discussed Japanese language proficiency and behavior required in business field. KP1 worked toward 1) creating new business partner and 2) establish and develop business relationship. 1) indicatedthat constant and continuing greeting behavior was one of the factors for success, and understanding the importance and having a greeting skill in Japanese was required. Regarding 2), it showed the following process:a) schedule coordination, b) greeting at the beginning, c) meeting, and 4) farewell. a) showed that the communication skill and socio-cultural competence to coordinate time, participants, place, topics, and equipment in Japanese was needed. b) wasexchanging bows, a handshake and business cards,and it showed understanding of each manner was desirable. c) showed that talking about non-business subjects (clothing, food and housing etc.) helped going into main issue smoothly. Besides, to discuss main subject, speech level shift and skill of clarification request were required in addition to the specialized knowledge.d) showed the process of exchanging souvenirs toguiding to the accommodation after the farewell. KP2 was positive toward 1) creating Japanese partner company and 2) execute the business. For 1), KP2 continued communicating and announcing business achievement over the years, and found the importance of wishing to be a business partner, and having communication skill to accommodatebuyer in Japanese. KP2 had an experience of apologizing fortheir failure, and showed that in the process of 2), the skill of apologizing and discussing to prevent another mistake was required. Also, e-mails and phone calls were often used, and it was useful to understand the tendency to go into main issue after expressing the personal information (division name, position, and name etc.) first.Peculiarly, talking on the phone is a dynamic conversation regarding main issue, and it was strongly requiredto accommodate talking speed and dialect, and to verbalize for asking or clarify of the unclear pointsquickly.
