Yi Hyoseok(1908-1942) was an unapologetic lover of classical western high culture. He was also a modernist who contributed a great deal to the formation of Korea’s modern literature, leaving behind a substantial legacy of fiction, essays, and poetry. His unabashed admiration of western (particularly that of Europe) culture brought him a great deal of critical excoriation due to the perception that he lacked “historical consciousness.” The eminent scholar of Korean literature Gim Yunshik, after leaving Yi out of his comprehensive treatment of Korean Literature titled The History of Korean Literature, wrote a lengthy tract on the “pathological” nature of Yi’s writings, claiming that Yi was incapable of literary creation without imitating that of the West. What was unacceptable to nationalist scholars was the perception that Yi was choosing another tradition over that of his own. In fact, this in essence is what he was doing. His training in English literature at Keijo Imperial University provided him with a cosmopolitan worldview that shaped both his literary and everyday aesthetics. Moreover, his Europhilic aesthetics provided him a standard with which to level a critique against East Asian and Korean civilization. This paper examines Yi Europhilic and cosmopolitan aesthetics in the dual context of their reception by Korean nationalist scholars and their significance as a critic of the Korean tradition as well as manifestation of universal humanistic values.

이효석(1908-1942)은 전형적인 고전적 서구 고급 문화에 대한 애정을 거침없이 드러낸 작가다. 그는 소설, 수필, 시 분야에서 주목할 만한 역작을 남김으로써 한국 근대문학의 형성에 지대한 공헌을 했다. 서구 문화(특히 유럽문화)에 대한 거침없는 애정표현으로 인해 그는 “역사 의식”을 결여했다는 지적과 함께 엄청난 비난을 받았다. 걸출한 한국문학 학자인 김영식은, 한국문학의 역사라는 제목의 방대한 연 구에서 이효석을 배제하면서, 이효석의 작품이 지니고 있는 병적인 성향에 관한 긴 논문을 썼고 서구를 모방하지 않고는 작품을 쓸 줄 모르는 작가라고 폄하했다. 민족주의 학자들에게 이효석이 그 자신의 전 통이 아닌 또 다른 전통을 선택했다는 개념은 도저히 받아들이기 힘든 것이었다. 그러나 본질적으로 이 효석의 선택은 바로 그런 것이었다. 경성제국대학에서 받은 영문학 교육은 그의 문학적, 혹은 일상에서 의 미학적 관념 형성의 기반이 된 범세계적 세계관을 제공했다. 나아가서, 유럽적 심미학은 그에게 동아 시아와 한국의 문화를 겨냥한 비평의 기준을 정립해 주었다. 이 논문을 통해 이효석의 유럽적, 범세계적 미학이 한국의 민족주의 학자들에게 어떻게 인식되었는지를 살펴봄으로써, 범세계적 인류애의 가치의 발현으로서는 물론 한국의 전통문화에 대한 비평으로서 그의 작품이 지닌 의미를 검토해 보고자 한다.
