This research examines the way how lay Christians learn about prayer, which is based on qualitative research. It conducts a study on how much importance contemporary lay Christians attach to prayer, how much satisfaction they get out of their prayer time and what the role of church plays. In order to explore these, the depth interviews of 7 lay Christians who belong to Presbyterian Church were carried out. The result of the interviews divides into three. The core result of this study can be recapitulated as follows. All the participants recognized the fact that prayer is important in their faith life. Prayer was believed as a necessary part to develop the relationship with God. However, no one was satisfied with their prayer. First of all, they said that it was because they did not have enough time to pray in their daily life. Nevertheless, a more fundamental reason was because they could not feel the presence of God. All of them said that they met God in depth in the past but not any longer. Participants said that they had learned about prayer from other Christians. They had heard of many prayers in the services and tried to emulate others’ prayers. The most popular way of learning about prayer was in the services and other Christian meetings. They were also teaching their children in a similar way. In this process, church plays a passive role. All the participants said that they had never been taught by church. When they had questions, they tended to ask the questions to other fellow Christians rather than pastors. It was different from the way of studying the Bible. Many churches organized various Bible study groups while they did not have any meeting that people could systematically be trained by prayer. The result of this study explains the theoretical reason why the prayer of Korean Christians are mostly focused on worldly matters. Furthermore, it shows the necessity of Church education on prayer for the spiritual maturity of Korean Christians.

본 논문은 인터뷰에 기초한 질적연구를 바탕으로 장로교에 속한 평신도 그리스도인들이 기도를 어떻게 배우고 있는지 살펴본다. 현대의 그리스도인들은 그들의 신앙생활에서 기도를 얼마만큼 중요하게 생각하는지, 그들의 기도생활에 만족하고 있는지, 그리고 그 과정에서 교회는 어떤 역할을 하고 있는지에 대한 부분을 탐구한다. 이를 위해 현재 장로교회에 소속된 7명의 그리스도인들을 대상으로 심층인터뷰를 진행하였고, 그 자료를 바탕으로 세 가지 범주로 나누어 주제에 접근한다. 연구결과, 연구 참여자들은 모두 그들의 신앙생활에서 기도가 중요하다는 것을 인식하고 있었다. 기도는 하나님과 깊은 관계를 맺기 위해서 반드시 필요한 것으로 생각되었다. 하지만 어느 누구도 자신의 기도생활에 만족하지는 못했다. 일차적으로 그것은 매일의 삶속에서 기도 시간이 충분히 확보되지 못하는 것 때문이었다. 하지만 더 본질적으로 그것은 하나님의 임재에 대한 느낌과 관련이 있었다. 인터뷰에 참여한 7명 모두 과거에 어느 한 시점에서 그들은 하나님을 깊이 만난 적이 있다고 말했지만, 현재는 그런 하나님의 현존이나 임재를 충분히 느끼지 못하고 있다고 했다. 이 부분에 대한 그들의 이유는 다 달랐다. 기도를 어디에서 어떻게 배웠냐는 질문에 대해서는 참여자 모두 다른 사람들의 기도를 듣고 배웠다고 했다. 그들이 가장 쉽게 기도를 배우고 있는 곳은 예배 속의 대표기도였으며, 교회안의 모임 안에서 다른 사람들이 하는 기도를 듣고 모방한다고 대답했다. 그리고 그들이 배운 대로 동일한 방식으로 그들의 자녀를 가르치고 있었다. 이 과정에서 교회는 소극적인 역할을 했다. 참여자 모두 교회에서 기도에 대한 교육을 받아 본 적이 없다고 말했고, 기도에 대한 의문이 생길 때도 목회자들보다 기도를 많이 한다고 생각하는 주위의 평신도 그리스도인들에게 물어본다고 답했다. 이것은 성경공부와는 대조적이었다. 대부분의 교회가 성경공부에는 많은 시간을 할애하고 있는 반면, 기도에 대한 교육은 거의 없었다. 이러한 연구 결과는 한국 그리스도인들의 기도가 기복적일 수밖에 없는 이유를 잘 설명할 수 있는 이론적 준거를 제공해준다. 나아가 한국 그리스도인들의 영적인 성숙을 지향하기 위해 보다 적극적인 교회의 개입과 교육의 필요성을 제시해 준다.
