In late 1970s, Seo Jeongju published travel prose books and travel poetry books based on his experiences of world travel during 10 months. However, there exists considerable contrast between the two types of text. Focusing on this aspect, the paper analyzes the contrast between the two types of text and explores the directing points of the travel poetry. Therefore, this paper analyzes the difference between the narrative point and the narrative method of the two texts, reveal the intention of Seo Jeongju’s hidden in his poetry, and try to clarify the relation between the travel poetry and the Seo Jeongju’s poetry. The results from the comparative analysis of the travel prose and the travel poetry are as follows. First, while the travel prose contains both memories of colonialism and imperialist view in a mixed way, the travel poetry appears to avoid this intentionally or shows an intention to avoid it. Second, while the travel prose emphasizes the place identity of each location, the travel poetry focuses on people. Third, the contrast between the prose and the poetry occurred in the process of constructing the aesthetic sense of the works or in the process of enhancing the Korean identity. Fourth, the perspective toward black people changes according to the place identity, and it becomes more prominent in the travel poetry. Fifth, while the colonialist context and orientalism is exposed in the travel prose, he overcomes these and attempts the convergence and harmony of Eastern and Western cultures. The directing points of the travel poetry can be elucidated as follows. Seo Jeong-ju rediscovers the travel and seeks ‘Moodeung Poetics’ which can be represented as his later poetic universe. This may also be an extension of placeness of Silla spirit, which used to be limited within Gilmajae, to the other ‘World’.

서정주는 1970년대 후반의 세계여행 체험을 바탕으로 기행산문집 『떠돌며 머흘며 무엇을 보려느뇨』와 기행시집 『西으로 가는 달처럼…』을 출간했다. 그런데 동일한 체험을 바탕으로 하고 있지만 두 개의 텍스트는 서로 다른 지향점을 보여준다. 물론 장르 자체가 다르기 때문에 기행산문집과 기행시집의 지향점이 다른 것이 문제가 될 수는 없다. 그러나 무엇이 어떻게 달라졌는지를 살핀다면 기행시집의 의도가 더욱 분명해질 것이다. 더욱이 기행문이 먼저 씌어진 뒤 그 정서를 바탕으로 기행시가 재구성되었다는 점을고려하면, 서정주에게는 산문으로 써야 했던 것과 시로 써야 했던 것이 존재했다고 볼 수 있다. 이에 본고는 두 텍스트의 지향점과 서술방법의 차이를 비교해 기행시집에 숨겨진 서정주의 의도를 밝히고, 기행시라는 형식과서정주 후기 시학의 연관성을 조명하고자 한다. 서정주에게 기행문이 세계여행에 대한 1차 기록물이자 기획・후원 주체의 기대, 그리고 당대의 담론을 의식한 문명비평기였다면, 기행시는 여행의최종 결과물로서 인류 보편의 가치를 탐구한 서정주의 시적 도정의 산물이었다. 그러므로 기행산문집과 기행시집을 비교한 다음의 결과는 곧 기행시집의 지향점이 된다. 첫째, 기행문에 식민주의의 기억과 제국주의적 가치관이 혼재한다면, 기행시에서는 이를 의식적으로 피하려는 의도가 나타난다. 둘째, 기행문에서 각 지역별 장소정체성이 강조된 반면, 기행시에서는 사람에 초점이 맞추어졌으며 장소에 따라 흑인을 바라보는 시각이 달라진다. 셋째, 기행문과 기행시의 차이는 작품의 미학적 의미를 구축하거나 한국적 정체성을 강화하는 과정에서 발생했다. 넷째, 기행문에 식민주의적 맥락과 오리엔탈리즘이 나타난다면, 기행시에서는 이를 극복하고 동서양 문화의 조화를 추구했다. 1970년대 서정주는 세계여행을 통해 신라정신의 보편적 확장을 모색했다. 그 과정에서 기행시는 후기 시학의 새로운 형성력으로 작용했고, 『서으로 가는 달처럼…』은 그동안 ‘신라-질마재’에 한정되어 있던 신라정신의장소성을 또 다른 ‘세계’로 확장하며 서정주의 후기시가 ‘무등(無等)시학’의세계로 나아가는 발판을 마련했다.
