If the 20th century is to be distinguished into the age of metaphor, the 21th century is to be distinguished into the age of metonymy. This distinction is also true to the Korean modern poetry. But metonymy is the most difficult part to be taught in the process of poetic education. The difficulties of metonymic education come from the extensiveness and diversity of the notion of ‘contiguity’ as an operative principle of metonymy, from the abstruseness in most of the 21th century’s Korean modern poetry making metonymy its foundation, and from the qualities of metonymy not only functioning simultaneously with other figures and working contextually but also frequenting over itself the other figures by its interpretative viewpoints owing to its own deep immanence. In this study, the four educational models are thus presented around the contiguity as an operative principle of metonymy. The basic principles constructing the contiguity are respectively distinguished into the ‘time and causality,’ the ‘space and sketching,’ the ‘hyper sensationfree association,’ and the ‘voice and signifiant.’ The poems being structurized by these principles are, then, respectively categorized into the ‘descriptive-narrative poetry,’ the ‘phenomenal-scenical poetry,’ the ‘fantastic-inward poetry,’ and the ‘linguistic-rhythmical poetry.’ These models as processes of educating in the concrete operative principle of contiguity are substantially to be identified with the distinctive aspects of the 21th century’s Korean modern poetry. The models of poetic education are used to approach poetically the metonymic system and metonymic imagination typifying the 21th century.

20세기를 은유의 시대, 21세기를 환유의 시대로 구분한다. 한국 현대시에서도 예외는 아니다. 하지만 시교육 과정에서 가장 가르치기 어려운 부분이환유다. 현대시 교육과정에서 환유를 가르칠 때의 난점은 환유의 작동원리인 ‘인접성’의 개념이 넓고 애매하다는 점, 환유를 근간으로 하는 21세기한국 현대시들이 대체로 난해하다는 점, 환유가 다른 비유들과 상호적으로기능하면서 맥락적으로 작용하기 때문에 해석 관점에 따라 다른 비유들과그 경계를 넘나든다는 점 등에서 찾을 수 있다. 이에 본고에서는 환유시의 작동원리인 인접성을 중심으로 네 가지 학습모형을 제시하고자 한다. 인접성을 구축하는 기본원리를 ‘시간과 인과’, ‘공간과 사생(寫生)’, ‘초감각과 자유연상’, ‘음성과 기표’로 구분한 후, 그 원리에 의해 구조화된 시들을 각각 ‘서술-서사시’, ‘현상–풍경시’, ‘환상–내면시’, ‘언어–리듬시’로 범주화시켰다. 인접성의 구체적인 작동원리를 학습하기 위한 이러한 모형은 최근 시의 특징적 양상을 이해하는 데 도움을줄 뿐만 아니라 그 핵심인 환유체계를 이해하는 데 도움을 줄 것이다. 이를통해 21세기 환유 시학의 가능성을 검토해보고자 한다.
