Mokjae Lee Samhwan, a descendant of Seongho, was a man who dedicated most of his life for the maintenance of his family and the Seongho-School. Thus, we can not explain him without explaining his family and the Seongho-School. Especially, Mokjae’s family kept on their descendants by adopting children from the generation of Mokjae’s grandfather, Aieng Lee Chim to the generation of Mokjae’s son. Mokjae also adopted his second brother, CheongKei Lee Jeonghwan’s second son, Lee Jaesang. As he was an adopted child, he carried on his descendant with an adopted child. Like this, it is thought that Mokjae’s family situation of going into an adopted child had influenced the formation of the thoughts of Mokjae, who put his family in the center of his life. Later on, his family and the Seongho-School became his sole purpose of his life. Currently, it is not easy to clearly identify Mokjae’s study. This problem is originated in the incompleteness of the collection of his works. The existing works of Mokjae are the patched up works of his first drafts, thus are only about 20% of his whole drafts. Therefore, it is not easy to affirm his academic accomplishment by the works that only exist. If we look at the poems included in the 1st and 2nd volume of his anthology, Mokjae preferred the seven letter poetry to the five letter poetry and he also preferred the eight-line poetry to the quatrain poetry. However, this characteristic was the general tendency of the contemporary literary subjects. The poetry of Mokjae makes it hard to look at the feelings in the poems and also the object of the poetry in a single perspective because even the objects have a considerable gap. By looking at the poetry of Mokjae we can confirm the two heterogeneous emotions surrounding his friends and family, the nostalgia and affection, and the grief and anguish are taking action complexly by being continued. Come to that, we can say that the central emotion of Mokjae’s poetry is grief based on affection, and affection to overcome the grief.

木齋 李森煥은 星湖 李瀷의 從孫으로 그 생의 대부분을 가문과 성호학파의 유지를 위해 바친 인물이다. 따라서 그에 대한 설명은 가문과 성호학파를 떠나서는 이루어질 수 없다. 특히 木齋의 가계는 그의 조부 鵝亭 李沈 대부터 그의 아들 대에 이르기까지 양자로 집안의 후사를 이어왔다. 목재 역시 중형 淸溪 李晶煥의 차남 李載常을 양자로 들였다. 그 자신이 양자로 들었던 것처럼 그도 양자로 겨우 후사를 이은 것이다. 이와 같은 양자 入繼의 가계 상황이 평생 가문을 생의 중심에 두고 살았던 木齋의 사고 형성에 적지 않은 영향을 미쳤으리라 생각되는데, 목재의 삶에서 가문과 성호학파는 그의 삶이 지니는 유일한 목적이 되었다. 현재 목재의 학문을 선명하게 확인하기 쉽지 않다. 이런 문제는 그의 문집이 지니는 불완전성에 기인한다. 현재 전하는 목재의 문집은 불타버린 초고를 다시 수습한 것으로, 초고의 20%에 지나지 않는다. 따라서 현재 전하는 문집만으로 목재의 학문적 성취를 단언하기는 쉽지 않다. 현재 전하는 목재의 문집 권 1, 2에 수록되어 있는 시를 보면 목재는 5언시보다는 7언시를, 절구보다는 율시를 선호했다고 할 수 있지만 이런 특징은 당대 문인들의 일반적인 경향과 같은 것이다. 목재의 시는 시 속에 드러나는 정서는 물론이고 시의 대상에서도 상당한 편폭을 지녀 목재의 시를 하나의 시선으로 바라보기 어렵게 만든다. 그런데 목재의 시를 살펴보면 가족과 친지에 대한 그리움과 애정, 고뇌와 애상의 정서라는 두 가지 이질적인 정서가 목재의 시에서 상호 연계되어 복합적으로 작용하고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 그런 점에서 愛情에 바탕을 둔 哀傷, 哀傷을 극복하고자 하는 愛情을 목재 시의 중추적 정서라고 할 수 있다.
