This paper aims to analyze the narrative strategies in Kiri-ch`onghwa and to consider its literary historical meaning. Lee hyun-ki, the writer of Kiri-ch`onghwa used various narrative techniques such as taking the psychological change of character as narrative driving force, delaying the narrative and tried dramatic reversal, inserting realistic elements into fiction. ‘Ki-i, the marvelous motif, which had previously served as a major narrative driving force in yadam, is replaced by the development of various narrative techniques. The writer increased the likelihood of narrative and created more interesting and realistic stories through this process. The tendency to enjoy the story itself in this way can also be seen in other stories of the 19th century. This is due to the emergence of a competent writer like Lee hyun-ki and at the same time, by the change of the literary field where such a writer can come out.

본고는 『기리총화』 소재 각화의 서사기법을 살피고 그 의미를 밝힌 것이다. 「채생기우」, 「김생현부」, 「곡배마」를 통해 확인한 결과 『기리총화』의 작가는 인물 심리의 변화를 서사의 동력으로 삼고, 서사를 지연하여 극적 반전을 꾀하였으며, 허구를 사실적으로 粉飾하는 등 다양한 서사기법을 활용하였다. 그 과정에서 기존에 야담과 같은 단형서사에서 주요한 서사 동력으로 작용하였던 '기이'는 다채로운 서사기법의 전개로 대체된다. 작가는 이를 통해 서사의 개연성을 높이며 보다 흥미롭고 실감나는 이야기를 만들어냈다. 이처럼 이야기 자체를 재미있게 향유하려는 경향은 19세기 다른 야담집을 통해서도 확인할 수 있다. 이는 이현기와 같은 역량있는 작가의 등장에 의한 것이기도 하면서, 동시에 그러한 인물을 배출할 수 있는 문학 장의 변화에 의한 것이기도 하다.
