This paper examined through what scene-setting and sequencing the ‘Boys’ in the classical poetry of ‘The Korea Daily News’ gained certain qualities. Also, the paper analyzed what qualitative changes the traditional qualities of ‘Boys’ experienced in the Enlightenment Period, especially focusing on whether the changes at the time completely parted from tradition or appropriated and creatively succeeded tradition. The result showed that the qualities of ‘Boys’ affirmed and succeeded the view of child in Sunglihak on one hand while they denied it and were appropriated into a form—modern nation state—required by the new time period on the other hand. Moreover, the ‘Boys’ of the classical poetry in ‘The Korea Daily News’ were embodied in two large aspects. First, the ‘Boys’ were imagined as a group sharing a common destiny of the nation through the spell of self-prophecy, and second, the ‘Bad Boys’ were called as a mirror image awakening self-deception.

본고에서는 『대한매일신보』 소재 시가(詩歌) 내에서 ‘소년’이 어떠한 배치와 계 열화를 통해 특정한 자질을 갖게 되었는지를 살폈다. 또한 이 과정에서 전통적 ‘소년’의 자질이 근대계몽기에 들어 어떠한 질적 변화를 경험하였는지를 분석하였다. 특히 이때의 변화가 전통과 완전히 결별을 고한 것인지, 아니면 전통을 전유(專 有, Appropriation)하여 창조적으로 계승한 것인지를 고구하였다. 그 결과, ‘소년’의 자질은 한편으로는 성리학적 아동관을 긍정하고 계승하되, 다른 한편으로는 그것을 부정하고 또한 새로운 시대상이 요구하는 형태-근대국민국가-로 전유되었 다. 더불어 『대한매일신보』 소재 시가(詩歌)에서 소년은 크게 두 가지 양상으로 형상화되었다. 첫째 ‘소년’은 자기예언의 주문을 통해 국가의 운명공동체로 상상되 었으며, 둘째 이와 달리 ‘악소년(惡少年)’은 자기기만을 각성시키는 거울상(像) 으로 호명되었다.
