In order to find ways to better educate engineering students for technical communication, various education efforts using the integration of technical communication into engineering design have been reported by many engineering programs in foreign universities. For that purpose, an engineering professor taught two separate courses, engineering (cornerstone) design and technical writing, in a manner of integrating two lecture subjects. He discussed some of lecture outcomes based on a survey by the students after completing the courses. It was found that students could learn the technical writing better than they studied the subject on regular technical writing course. However, it was not observed that learning the written communication skills supported students’ design activities. It is expected that the findings could be helpful for developing a course integrating technical communication into engineering design.

공과대학 학생들이 전공 주제에 대한 글쓰기를 제대로 못 배우는 현실을 극복하기 위해서, 공학글쓰기를 공학설계의 부분으로 가르치는 외국 대학들의 교육 사례들이 보고되고 있다. 그런 통합 교육을 목표로, 공과대학 교수 1 인이 기초설계와 공학글쓰기 두 과목을 맡아서, 수업 주제를 연계하는 방식으로 가르친 후, 수업에 대한 학생들의 설문 결과를 바탕으로 긍정적인 수업 효과와 미흡한 부분 등을 토의하였다. 설계 활동과 관련한 전문 주제를 의사소통하는 글쓰기 학습 면에서는 긍정적인 효과가 있는 것 같지만, 글쓰기가 설계 과정의 여러 국면을 뒷받침하는 효과는 관찰되지 못했다. 이 논문에서 토의된 내용이 두 주제를 통합하는 과목 개발에 의미 있는 자료가 되기를 기대한다.
