The purpose of this article is not merely to describe the cultural and historical factors that came together and ignited the great economic takeoff of modern Korea and their effects on Korean churches, but to observe and analyze the cultural changes in churches in response to the emerging culture of wealth, and to consider the churches’ proper role in the biblical transformation of Korean society. Whether conservative or liberal, one needs to be quite courageous to criticize one’s own ideological community. However, I believe that such criticism must come from within if there are to be positive changes leading to healthier churches and society. We will consider some factors working to reshape the culture and values of Korean churches during times of intense economic growth and also how Korean churches should evolve in light of such realities. This article is rooted in the critical idea that Korean conservatives must change now. The genesis of this change must be self reflection and self examination. There have been many criticisms toward the conservatives, but most of them have from liberals, outside of conservative circles. But now is the time for a criticism to come from within, in order to develop constructive alternatives for the Korean evangelical churches in matters of material possessions.

이 글은 한국사회의 경제성장이 교회에 끼친 영향에 대해 단순히 문 화적 역사적 사실을 기술하는데 그치는 것이 아니라, 신생부자와 경제 의 성장이 교회문화와 신앙생활의 변화에 끼친 영향을 관찰 분석하여 교회가 사회 속에서 성경적인 변혁을 추구할 수 있는지에 대한 것을 중 심으로 논의를 전개한다. 보수적인 성향을 가지고 있거나, 진보적인 성 향을 가지고 있던 간에 자신이 속한 공동체의 가치관을 분석하고 비판 하려면 용기가 필요하다. 하지만, 긍정적인 변혁을 이끌어내는 진정한 비판은 외부가 아닌 내부에서 시작되어야 한다고 믿는다. 지금 한국교 회는 건강한 비판 세력이 더 많이 내부에서 나와야 한다. 사회의 변화를 이끌어야 할 교회가 사회의 염려를 사고 있다. 비교적 빠른 시간에 경제 성장을 이룬 탓에 부작용도 많다. 이 글에서 한국교회가 문화와 교회가 추구하는 가치관에 어떠한 변화를 어떻게 가져올 수 있을지에 대한 고 민을 논했다. 이 글은 한국교회의 보수주의는 심각한 변화를 필요로 하 고 있다는 것을 전제하고 있다. 그러한 변화의 시작은 자기 성찰과 자기 반성으로부터 비롯되어야 한다. 그동안 보수주의권에 대한 비판은 있 어왔지만, 대부분의 비판은 보수권 밖의 진보주의자들에 의한 것이었 다. 하지만, 이 글을 통해 물질만능 시대의 복음주의권 교회들이 건강해 지기 위해서는 그러한 비판이 내부에서 시작되어야 한다는 논의를 전개했다.
